Abstract:
To characterize coastal change, historical maps and complementary records were compiled including: topographic sheets (T-sheets), hydrographic sheets (H-sheets, smooth sheets), shorelines, and bathymetric soundings surrounding the Mississippi (MS) barrier islands over several time periods (1916-1920, 2008-2009 and 2016). One goal of this work was to create a time-series of bathymetric change maps around the islands. This USGS data release includes three digital elevation models (DEMs) for 1916 to 1920, 2008 to 2009, and 2016; however, this metadata file pertains to the snap raster (MS2016_snapraster_50m.tif) used to define pixel locations during raster DEM creation. This work was completed in cooperation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (Mobile, Alabama) and the National Park Service as part of the Mississippi Coastal Improvements Program (MsCIP).

This blank raster file was created prior to building the 1916 to 1920, 2008 to 2009 and 2016 bathymetric DEMs (contained within this data release) and ensures consistent pixel location for the three DEMs, allowing for direct DEM comparison during subsequent bathy change assessments. After creating a bounding polygon shapefile, the snap raster was created within ArcGIS 10.4.1 using the 'Polygon to Raster' tool and has a cell size of 50 meters. Individual cell values were all set to 0, and are entirely arbitrary and irrelevant. The spatial reference system of the snap raster is Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) and North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) GEOID12B.

First a new polygon shapefile, with a larger spatial coverage than the 1916-1920, 2008-2009, and 2016 XYZ datasets, was created using larger than all XYZ data cover was created. Using the 'Polygon to Raster' tool, the snap raster was created with a cell size of 50 m. All raster cell values were set to 0, and are entirely arbitrary and irrelevant.
