Description:
Abstract:
Teledyne© RDI Sentinel-V Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) were deployed at Madeira Beach, Florida at site MB2, located 1.9 kilometers (km) from the shoreline at 5.6-meters (m) depth (27.78897, -82.81229). The ADCPs measured pressure, bottom temperature, velocity profiles, and derived waves parameters. This data release includes data from March 2021 to September 2023. ADCP data collection at this site has been ongoing since 2017 and will be added in future releases.
Purpose:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) deployed a series of oceanographic instruments at Madeira Beach, Florida, from 2021-2023 to measure water levels, temperature, waves, and three-dimensional flow velocities throughout the water column. The instruments used include (1) Spotter wave buoys with Smart Moorings, (2) RBR pressure loggers, and (3) RDI Sentinel-V Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs). In conjunction with beach elevation surveys (Brown and others, 2018) and video camera monitoring, these data will be used for the development and validation of forecasts for a variety of coastal processes such as shoreline change, total water level, wave runup, and dune erosion during extreme storms.
Supplemental_Information:
Following USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC) data management protocols, these data were assigned a USGS field activity number (FAN), 2021-311-FA. Additional survey and data details are available on the Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System (CMGDS) at: https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2021-311-FA

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Teledyne© RDI Sentinel-V20 ADCPs have a velocity accuracy of ±0.3% of the water velocity relative to the ADCP ±0.3 centimeters/second (cm/s), velocity resolution of 0.1 cm/s, echo intensity profile precision of ±1.5 decibels (dB), echo intensity profile vertical resolution equal to the depth cell size, temperature precision of ±0.4° Celsius (C), temperature resolution of 0.1°, tilt accuracy of 2° root mean square (RMS), tilt precision of 0.05° RMS, compass accuracy of 2° RMS, compass resolution of 0.1°, and pressure sensor accuracy of 0.1% full scale.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The ADCP was calibrated prior to deployment and the datasets were checked after recovery to assess any drift or fouling that may have occurred during the deployment.
Completeness_Report:
Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details. Gaps between deployments were caused by factors such as instrument failure, premature battery depletion, or delays in the scheduled deployment. The published data represents raw measurements processed with the Velocity Software v1.7.21 (Teledyne RD Instruments, 2017). The default settings in the software were used to calculate the averaged current values. For wave data, WavesMon built within Velocity was used with default parameters, along with the following modifications: 128 frequency bands, a lower frequency threshold of 0.002 Hz, and 3 iterations of the IMLM algorithm. Additionally, any velocity data with a percent good value below 50% was replaced with a fill value. Outliers in wave period variables (wp, wp_peak, wp_z, wp_1) associated with low wave heights (<0.02 m) were identified and removed. The peak swell wave period (wp_swell) was published as raw data, showing abrupt jumps between values of 256, 85.3, and 51.2 seconds. Out-of-range negative direction values in the peak swell direction were replaced with fill value, and surface track (strk) outliers were identified at instances when the acoustic surface track spectrum (Sspec) had no data, which were also replaced with fill value.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Site location was obtained from a handheld global positioning system (GPS) Garmin® GPSmap 62s with a nominal accuracy of 3-5 meters 95% of the time (Wide Area Augmentation System [WAAS] accuracy in North America). Locations were collected in the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84) coordinate system.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Orthometric elevations were projected to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) and were estimated using NOAA's VDatum tool with estimates of local mean sea level from the corrected pressure data from the deployment. For these data, the uncertainties for vertical position are considered ~ 0.10 m.

Process_Description:
Teledyne© RDI Sentinel-V20 ADCPs were deployed at Madeira Beach, Florida during six separate time periods: 2021/03/10-2021/06/04, 2021/08/06-2021/11/19, 2022/02/18-2022/06/06, 2022/09/23-2023/01/12, 2023/01/12-2023/05/04, and 2023/05/04-2023/09/26. USGS divers arrived via boat at site MB2, located 1.9 kilometers from the shoreline at 5.8-m depth, and mounted the ADCP in an upward position on a pipe drilled to the seafloor. Each deployment lasted from three to four months and afterwards, divers went back to the site to recover and swap out the ADCP for a new one. The ADCPs were powered by internal and external batteries and its compass was calibrated in the laboratory before each deployment. Site coordinates were measured by a handheld Garmin® GPSmap 62s. The height from the seabed to the ADCP transducer was measured by divers with a ruler during each deployment and recovery.

Process_Description:
Upon recovery, data was downloaded from the instrument and processed using the Velocity v1.7.21.0 with WavesMon software. Wave processing settings in WavesMon included: 1200 second wave period, 128 frequency bands, 0.002 lower frequency threshold, SVP spectrum, 3 IMLM iterations, corrected for tilt, and auto removed bias. MATLAB R2021a was used to create the network common data form (netCDF, .nc) files with the data trimmed for the period in which the instruments were in the water. Attributes conforming to CF (Climate and Forecast) Metadata Convention (version 1.8) were added to the each file. Details of which portions of data were flagged and replaced with the fill value are available in the netCDF global attributes or in the data quality section of the metadata. The sample rates vary for each deployment and are specified in the netCDF global attributes. Times are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). These datasets include measurements during hurricanes Ian (September 2022), Nicole (November 2022), and Idalia (August 2023). NetCDF filenames include the site ID (MB2), deployment date (YYYYMMDD), an abbreviation of the instrument type ("A" for ADCP), and "curr" or "wvs" to specify current or wave data. Variables in the current netCDF include Northward, Eastward and upward velocities, echo intensity, percent good, correlation, raw and corrected pressure, temperature, heading relative to true north, pitch, roll, and battery voltage. Variables in the wave netCDF include wave parameters and spectra.
