This data release also includes a single pressure logger deployment at site MB3, located 23 meters northwest of MB2 (27.78910, -82.81248) at 5.7-m depth from May 2021 to August 2021. Purpose: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) deployed a series of oceanographic instruments at Madeira Beach, Florida, from 2021-2023 to measure water levels, temperature, waves, and three-dimensional flow velocities throughout the water column. The instruments used include (1) Spotter wave buoys with Smart Moorings, (2) RBR pressure loggers, and (3) RDI Sentinel-V Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs). In conjunction with beach elevation surveys (Brown and others, 2018) and video camera monitoring, these data will be used for the development and validation of forecasts for a variety of coastal processes such as shoreline change, total water level, wave runup, and dune erosion during extreme storms. Supplemental_Information: Following USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC) data management protocols, these data were assigned a USGS field activity number (FAN), 2021-311-FA. Logical_Consistency_Report: Pressure sensor data were compared to local atmospheric pressure before deployment and an offset was determined. This offset along with the time series of local atmospheric data were used to find corrected pressure data (variable name "P_1ac" and standard_name "sea_water_pressure_due_to_sea_water" in the netCDF files). Completeness_Report: Dataset is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details. Gaps between deployments were caused by factors such as instrument failure, premature battery depletion, or delays in the scheduled deployment. Data quality assurance and control involved inspecting the raw data and removing spurious values, particularly instances where the sensor incorrectly recorded a pressure of zero (Nowacki and others, 2024). Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Site location was obtained from a handheld global positioning system (GPS) Garmin© GPSmap 62s with a nominal accuracy of 3-5 meters 95% of the time (Wide Area Augmentation System [WAAS] accuracy in North America). Locations were collected in the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84) coordinate system. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Orthometric elevations were projected to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) and were estimated using NOAA's VDatum tool with estimates of local mean sea level from the corrected pressure data from the deployment. For these data, the uncertainties for vertical position are considered ~ 0.10 m. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Pressure loggers were deployed in three locations at Madeira Beach, Florida during 11 separate time periods. USGS divers arrived via boat at each site and attached the instrument to a frame. At site MB1, the pressure logger was attached to a rod on a 178-pound (lb) steel base and deployed from: 2021/10/27-2022/06/02, 2022/09/23-2023/01/12, 2023/01/12-2023/05/04, and 2023/05/04-2023/10/06. At site MB2, the pressure logger was attached to a steel frame drilled to the seafloor and deployed from: 2021/03/10-2021/06/04, 2021/11/19-2022/02/18, 2022/06/06-2022/09/23, 2022/09/23-2023/01/12, 2023/01/12-2023/05/04, and 2023/05/04-2023/09/26. At site MB3, the pressure logger was attached to a fiberglass grate with four, 45-lb weights and deployed from: 2021/05/06-2021/08/06. After each data collection period, divers went back to the site to recover and swap out the pressure loggers for new ones. Site coordinates were measured by a handheld Garmin© GPSmap 62s. The height from the seabed to the pressure sensor was measured with a ruler by the divers at the site during each deployment and recovery. Process_Date: 2023 Process_Step: Process_Description: The instrument data were processed and converted into network common data form (netCDF, .nc) files with the scripts runrskcsv2cdf.py and runrskcdf2nc.py from stglib python libraries (Nowacki and others, 2024), a package of code to process data consistent with procedures of the USGS Coastal/Marine Hazards and Resources Program. More information about stglib can be found here: https://stglib.readthedocs.io/en/latest/. The netCDFs contain the data trimmed for the period in which the instrument was in the water. Details of which portions of data were flagged and replaced with the fill value are available in the netCDF global attributes or in the data quality section of the metadata. Attributes conforming to CF (Climate and Forecast) Metadata Convention (version 1.8) were added to each file by stglib. Times are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). These datasets include measurements during hurricanes Ian (September 2022), Nicole (November 2022), and Idalia (August 2023). NetCDF filenames include site ID (MB1, MB2, MB3), deployment date (YYYYMMDD), an abbreviation of the instrument type ("P" for pressure logger), "b" or "cont" for burst or continuous pressure sampling mode, and "cal" for calibrated pressure data.
