Description:
Abstract:
This dataset defines the volume of sand along a 10-meter (m) wide profile between the seaward-most dune toe and the mean high water shoreline derived from light detection and ranging (lidar) digital elevation models (DEMs). Refer to Doran and others (2017) for more information about the source lidar data. These data support the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)-funded project entitled “Monitoring Hurricane Sandy Beach and Marsh Resilience in New York and New Jersey” (NFWF project ID 2300.16.055110), for which the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC) is using remotely-sensed data and targeted in-situ observations to monitor the post-restoration evolution of beaches, dunes, vegetative cover, and sediment budgets at seven post-Hurricane Sandy restoration sites in New York and New Jersey.
Purpose:
To provide data on the beach volume of New Jersey and New York sandy beaches
Supplemental_Information:
Field activity number (FANs) are unique identifiers assigned by the USGS to provide more information about the activities conducted in the field for a study. Please visit the Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System (CMGDS) field activity webpage for more information about each FAN related to this dataset. To look up a FAN, replace the alphanumeric string (example: 11CNT07) in the following url: https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=10CNT11.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data were assessed for quality analysis/quality control (QA/QC'd) in MATLAB by visual inspection. Any gaps or anomalies in the dataset result from lack of data coverage or rejection during QA/QC.
Completeness_Report:
This dataset is considered complete for the information presented as described in the abstract section. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal coordinates were projected to the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84) coordinate system with a resolution of 10 m alongshore. Refer to Doran and others (2017) for the source beach morphology horizontal positional accuracy. Additional horizontal accuracy was not determined.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Vertical accuracy is determined for each volume based on the scatter in the lidar dataset for each grid cell. Vertical accuracy was determined for each volume based on the scatter in the lidar dataset for each grid cell. Vertical coordinates were projected to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) coordinate system with a resolution of 15cm. Refer to Doran and others (2017) for the source beach morphology vertical positional accuracy.

Beach morphology variables used to compute beach volume in New York and New Jersey.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Beach morphology variables derived from lidar surveys (2010-2022) within the study area (New York and New Jersey) were used to calculate beach volume in MATLAB. Refer to Doran and others (2017) for more information about the source lidar data used in this calculation. The dune toe and shoreline along a profile every 10 m alongshore were used to define the horizontal extent of the beach. The beach volume in meters cubed per meter was calculated with a trapezoidal numerical integration (MATLAB’s “trapz.m”) summing the area under the 10x2.5 meter lidar DEM from shoreline to dune toe using a trapezoidal sum approximation. The propagated uncertainty was also calculated using the root mean square error from each grid cell (Miselis and McNich, 2006). The dataset was then converted to a comma-separated values file (.csv) in MATLAB for publication in this data release.
