Description:
Abstract:
The model input and output of topography and bathymetry values resulting from forecast simulations of coupled modeling scenarios occurring between 2015 and 2025 at Dauphin Island, Alabama, and described in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Open-File Report 2020–1001 (https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20201001), are provided here. For further information regarding model input generation and visualization of model output topography and bathymetry, refer to Mickey and others (2020).
Purpose:
These data were generated from the Delft 3D, empirical dune growth (EDGR), and XBeach models to indicate how Dauphin Island evolved over a span of approximately 10 years. The model-derived topographic and bathymetric digital elevation model (DEM) was generated following the simulations of Storminess bin 2 (ST2) with sea level 1 (SL1) scenario and Storminess bin 3 (ST3) with sea level 3 (SL3) scenario, and is included in the download file, R4_Final_DEM.zip, as a Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) file. This dataset consists of Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata and NetCDF files containing the following variables: coordinates of the model grid (Easting and Northing) and the final bathymetry/topography elevation (zend_ST2_SL1_R4 and zend_ST3_SL3_R4) model grids.

Process_Description:
The forecast model simulates a 10-year morphologic change on Dauphin Island with the restoration alternative 4, which results from hydrodynamic impacts and sediment transport with Delft 3D, XBeach, and EDGR models when forced with the ST2_SL1 and ST3_SL3 scenarios. The Delft 3D modeling portion was set up following the description provided in Jenkins and others (2020). Following the steps provided in the XBeach user manual (https://xbeach.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user_manual.html), the model was set up using a params.txt file. Significant wave heights, peak wave periods, and water levels were provided from the synthetic storm scenario described in Mickey and others (2020). The EDGR dune growth model was executed between the Delft 3D and XBeach model simulations and that model was also set up following the description in Mickey and others (2020). The resulting topographic and bathymetric elevations extracted at the end of each scenario were output into NetCDF files.

Process_Description:
Model bathymetric and topographic outputs were extracted in Mathworks MATLAB (R2016b) with functions provided in the OpenEarth toolbox (provided by Deltares, https://publicwiki.deltares.nl/display/OET/Tools). The resulting bathymetric and topographic elevations from the model grid were then packaged into NetCDF files, using the export functions available in MATLAB, for inclusion in this data release.
