Abstract:
Using version 5527 of the XBeach numerical model (Roelvink and others, 2009), barrier island morphological change was simulated at Dauphin Island, Alabama (AL), for a 30-year forecast of multiple storms and sea level rise, considering scenarios of no-action and beach and dune nourishment as described in Passeri and others (2021). The two-dimensional XBeach model can be applied to barrier islands to solve for time-dependent topography and bathymetry. The XBeach model setup requires the input of topographic and bathymetric elevations at each grid cell. Model inputs and outputs in the form of topography and bathymetry at each grid cell are provided in this data release. For further information regarding model input generation and visualization of model output, refer to Passeri and others (2021).

Why was the data set created?

These data were generated for the XBeach model to examine the effectiveness of nourishment in decadal barrier island morphological resilience at Dauphin Island, AL. Storm_4_Elevations_N.zip is a dataset consisting of Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata and a Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) file containing the following variables: coordinates of the model grid (Easting and Northing) and the Storm 4 final bathymetric/topographic (z) model elevation values, in meters, for the nourishment scenario.

    Date: 2020 (process 1 of 2)
    The XBeach model simulates morphologic change that results from hydrodynamic impacts and sediment transport. The model setup is outlined in Passeri and others, 2021. Boundary conditions in the form of hourly water levels and wave spectra were extracted from Bilskie and others, 2019.     Model bathymetric and topographic output was extracted using Mathworks MATLAB (R2017a) with functions included in the OpenEarth toolbox (provided by Deltares; https://publicwiki.deltares.nl/display/OET/Tools). The resulting bathymetric and topographic elevations from the model grid were then packaged into a NetCDF file using the functions available in MATLAB for inclusion in this data release.
