Title:
XYZ point data - Post Hurricane Sandy Beach Profile Survey Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet 2013
Abstract:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers(USACE) contracted a beach survey of Fire Island, New York from September 17–October 6, 2013, for the purpose of planning a beach reconstruction project following Hurricane Sandy. This dataset contains elevation data of subaerial morphology and nearshore bathymetry collected using real time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) and hydrography techniques. The data were provided to the U.S. Geological Survey(USGS) to contribute to an existing monitoring dataset of the beach and dune morphology at Fire Island.

Why was the data set created?

The data were originally collected for planning of a beach reconstruction project and provided to the USGS by the USACE. To ensure that SPCMSC data management protocols were followed, this survey was retroactively assigned a USGS field activity number (FAN), 13CNT06. Additional survey and data details are available at http://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=13CNT06.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 17-Sep-2013 (process 1 of 3)
This survey was performed using a combination of real time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) and hydrographic procedures, positional control points were provided by the USACE. Horizontal control for the project is referenced to the State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS), New York Long Island Lambert North American Datum of 1983(NAD83)(2011). The vertical datum is referenced to National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). The primary control for this project was furnished by the USACE and recovered by McKim & Creed, Inc. The original USACE dataset, NAD_1983_StatePlane_New_York_Long_Island_FIPS_3104_Feet, was provided to the USGS in state plane and later converted to NAD83 UTM zone 18N by USGS staff, using ArcGIS v.10.2.2. The steps were: ArcToolbox>>Data Management Tools>> Projections and Transformations>> Feature>> Project>> Input coordinate system: "State plane NAD_1983_StatePlane_New_York_Long_Island_FIPS_3104_Feet", Output Coordinate System: "UTM zone 18N".
