Title:
Offshore baseline for the northeastern Florida (FLne) coastal region generated to calculate shoreline change rates
Abstract:
Sandy ocean beaches are a popular recreational destination, often surrounded by communities containing valuable real estate. Development is on the rise despite the fact that coastal infrastructure is subjected to flooding and erosion. As a result, there is an increased demand for accurate information regarding past and present shoreline changes. To meet these national needs, the Coastal and Marine Geology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is compiling existing reliable historical shoreline data along open-ocean sandy shores of the conterminous United States and parts of Alaska and Hawaii under the National Assessment of Shoreline Change project. There is no widely accepted standard for analyzing shoreline change. Existing shoreline data measurements and rate calculation methods vary from study to study and prevent combining results into state-wide or regional assessments. The impetus behind the National Assessment project was to develop a standardized method of measuring changes in shoreline position that is consistent from coast to coast. The goal was to facilitate the process of periodically and systematically updating the results in an internally consistent manner.

Why was the data set created?

This dataset includes a reference baseline used by the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) to calculate rate-of-change statistics for northeastern Florida from Fernandina Beach to Cape Canaveral. This baseline layer serves as the starting point for all transects cast by the DSAS application. The transects intersect each shoreline and establish measurement points used to calculate shoreline-change rates. Rates of long-term and short-term shoreline change were generated in a GIS using the DSAS version 4.3- An ArcGIS extension for calculating shoreline change: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2008-1278, Thieler, E.R., Himmelstoss, E.A., Zichichi, J.L., and Ergul, Ayhan.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 2013 (process 1 of 6)
A baseline was constructed offshore from the time series of shoreline positions using standard editing tools in Esri's ArcMap v10. The baseline was positioned to conform to changes in the combined orientation of the shorelines alongshore. This was done so that the transects, which are generated by the Digital Shoreline Analysis System v4.3 from the baseline, would intersect perpendicular to the general trend of the shorelines. This process step and all subsequent process steps were performed by the same person - M.G. Kratzmann. Person who carried out this activity:

    Date: 2013 (process 2 of 6)
The baseline feature class was imported into a personal geodatabase in ArcCatalog v10 by right-clicking on the geodatabase > Import for use with the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) v4.3 software to perform rate calculations.
    Date: 2013 (process 3 of 6)
The baseline feature class was exported from a personal geodatabase to a shapefile in ArcCatalog v10 by performing a right-mouse click on the data layer > export > to shapefile (single).
    Date: 2015 (process 4 of 6)
The baseline shapefile was projected in ArcToolbox v10.2 > Data Management Tools > Projections and Transformations > Project. parameters: input projection - UTM zone 17N (WGS 84); output projection- geographic coordinates (WGS 84); transformation = none.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
The attribute in this layer is based on the requirements for use within the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) software (USGS Open-File Report 2008-1278). The data have been quality checked.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
The baseline serves as a reference point for transects cast by the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) software. It does not correspond to any real-world feature.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
This baseline file is complete and contains the single baseline segment used to cast transects along sections of the northeastern Florida coastal region where lidar shoreline position data were available and additional shoreline data are present to calculate either a short- or long-term rate.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
The single polyline has a unique identification attribute (ID) of 1. This field is used by the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) to designate the alongshore order of baselines if there are more than one.
