The cameras faced north/north-east (c1) and north-east/east (c2) along the beach and collected images for 17 minutes at 2Hz every half hour during daylight hours. They ran daily from March through June 2021, February through July 2023 and January through September 2024; the cameras collected raw images and produced snapshots and time-averaged image products. This data release includes the necessary intrinsic orientation (IO) and extrinsic orientation (EO) calibration data to utilize imagery to make quantitative measurements. USGS researchers analyzed the imagery collected from this camera to remotely sense a range of information including shoreline position, sandbar migration, wave run-up on the beach, alongshore currents, and nearshore bathymetry. These cameras are part of the USGS CoastCam network, supported by the Total Water Level/Coastal Change Project under the Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program (CMHRP). Purpose: Data were obtained to document interannual changes in shoreline position and coastal morphology. These data (81,613 Joint Photographic Experts Group RGB images) are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the public. These data can be further processed to produce orthorectified products that can be viewed in a geographic information system (GIS) or other software to identify topographic and shallow-water bathymetric features. Supplemental_Information: The bounding coordinates below represent the approximate limits of the rectified images from the CoastCam. The cameras were initially positioned to maintain approximately 7.5m of cliff toe overlap in their field of view (FOV). The intrinsic calibration photos were taken on 20210225 for the 2021 and 2023 deployments and on 20240105 for the 2024 deployment and their location information is not consequential. For each deployment (2021, 2023, and 2024), the cameras were positioned pointing roughly north-east (c1) and east (c2), however each deployment should be considered separately with regards to extrinsic calibration. To place the photos taken by the CoastCam into real world coordinates and to rectify them into a planar view, objects within the FOV of the camera must be located. To do so, the elevation and position of the camera lenses in the CoastCam setup were measured with the RTK GPS. Then, multiple stationary targets were spread through the camera FOV to be used as GCPs, and the location of each was measured with the RTK GPS equipment. The GCPs consisted of large square targets, divided into quadrants and colored white and black, and were either made of fabric and laid flat on the ground (center point on ground was surveyed) or made of wood and propped up to face the CoastCam (bottom-center, between black and white at ground level, was surveyed). When all GCPs were in place, a snapshot was taken with the camera. On 20210317, multiple images (3 for c1) and on 20230322 (2 for c1 and 3 for c2y) were taken with the GCPs moving between images to provide more surveyed targets (CACO02_c1_20210317_GCP#_image_raw.jpg, CACO02_c1_20230322_GCP#_image_raw.jpg, CACO02_c2_20230322_GCP#_image_raw.jpg). There are 4 sets of EO images for each camera (CACO02_c2_20210310_EO, CACO02_c1_20210317_EO, CACO02_c1_20230322_EO, CACO02_c2_20230322_EO, CACO02_c1_20240105_EO, CACO02_c2_20240105_EO, CACO02_c1_20240612_EO, CACO02_c2_20240612_EO). All IO and EO images have EXIF and other imagery header information encoded within each file, see the process steps for more information. To place the photos taken by the CoastCam into real world coordinates and to rectify them into a planar view, objects within the FOV of the camera must be located. The elevation and position of the lenses in the CoastCam setup were estimated by surveying the top of each camera housing with an RTK GPS (approximately 9cm above the camera center). The CoastCam took pictures of the position of each target within the camera view.
