Description:
Abstract:
The data in this release re-map the beach and nearshore environment at Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, MA and provide updated environmental context for the 2020 CoastCam installation that looks out at the coast shared by beachgoers, shorebirds, seals, and sharks. This is related to the field activity 2022-015-FA and a collaboration with the National Park Service at Cape Cod National Seashore to monitor the region that falls within the field of view of CoastCam CACO-01, which are two video cameras aimed at the beach. In March and April 2023, U.S. Geological Survey and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) scientists conducted field surveys to collect topographic and bathymetric data. Images of the beach for use in structure-from-motion were taken with a camera (SONY a6000) and a post-processed kinematic (PPK) system attached to a helium powered balloon-kite (Helikite). High-precision GPS targets (AeroPoints) and numbered black and white tarps were used as ground control points. Bathymetry was collected in the nearshore using a single-beam echosounder mounted on a surf capable self-righting electric autonomous surface vehicle. Agisoft Metashape (v. 1.8.1) was used to create a digital surface model and orthomosaic with the collected imagery.
Purpose: Ground control points for georeferencing the aerial imagery.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
AeroPoints have an internal accuracy (positions relative to other AeroPoints in the same dataset) down to 1 mm, but the general internal horizontal accuracy is 10 mm or better and the vertical accuracy is 20 mm or better. Local accuracy is assessed by taking GPS shots on top of AeroPoints and the GPS is referencing local reference mark HOM RM1. Global accuracy (AeroPoints relative to NAD83[2011] datum) is assessed by using Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) network corrections, the positions and elevations are produced with variance data and the minimum global accuracy of the AeroPoints can be calculated using the distance from the base station: Global Accuracy = Internal Accuracy in mm + (Baseline Distance *2).
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The file contains USGS field activity 2023-011-FA navigation data: ground control points (AeroPoints) for use in tandem with the aerial imagery.
Completeness_Report:
There are a total of 10 usable ground control points. AeroPoints were surveyed with the RTK equipment for QC and results were compared to the Propeller Network values; all values were within 2 cm, but as the RTK values are less accurate only the Propeller values are provided for the AeroPoints. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
See attributes for internal xy variance in millimeters. Local accuracy is 2 cm based on RTK positions in relation to the known reference mark. Minimum global horizontal accuracy is 3 cm, average is 1.2 cm.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
See attributes for internal z variance in millimeters. Local accuracy is 2 cm based on RTK positions in relation to the known reference mark. Minimum global vertical accuracy is 4 cm, average is 2.2 cm.
Lineage:
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The ground control points were processed with the following steps:
1. Ten AeroPoints were deployed evenly spaced across the survey area. AeroPoints were left on for ~2 hours to collect GNSS data.
2. Once connected to Wifi, the AeroPoint data were uploaded and run through a post-processing kinematic algorithm of the CORS network to get a global accuracy. The data were exported with xyz variances in the horizontal datum NAD83(2011) to produce latitude, longitude, and ellipsoid heights, and then UTM19N and NAVD88 using Geoid 18 was used to produce orthometric heights. These are exported to a CSV file and named 2023011FA_Truro_nav_GCPs.csv.
