Title:
Raw X-ray diffraction data of cores from the New England Mud Patch collected on USGS Field Activity 2016-001-FA
Abstract:
Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response. The New England Mud Patch (NEMP), located south of Cape Cod, is an unusual feature on the U.S. Continental Shelf in that it is composed of fine-grained sediment layers containing a relatively-homogeneous mix of sand, silt, and clay-sized particles bounded by more typical sandy shelf sediments. The unique characteristics and nature of this deposit is due to a derivation of sediments that have been transported to, and deposited in, a basal bowl-shaped depression since the last glacial maximum. Ninety-two piston, vibra-, and gravity cores with a maximum length of 8.2 meters were collected from across the New England Mud Patch during a 2-leg, 10-day cruise aboard the R/V Endeavor in the spring of 2016. Geologic characterization and analysis of a subset of the cores including grain size, CaCO3, mineral composition, and bulk index properties (undrained shear strength, water content, density, and porosity) of discrete samples was carried out at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center's (WHCMSC) Sediment Analysis Laboratory. This data release contains the results of these analyses, along with visual core descriptions and summary sheets for each core analyzed for this study.
Supplemental_Information:
Cores were collected on the 2016 R/V Endeavor cruise EN577 from April 19, 2016 to May 2, 2016. Information about this expedition, also known as USGS Field Activity 2016-001-FA, is available at https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2016-001-FA

    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This dataset contains 96 ASCII text files containing the raw data results of X-ray diffraction analysis of powdered Mud Patch samples, as well as a CSV spreadsheet, "EN577_XRD_ProfileID.csv" linking sample ID's and their corresponding output file names. Samples were analyzed using a Rigaku Miniflex X-Ray Diffraction unit and processed with Rigaku software. Each sample analysis produced an output file comprised of 78 lines of text describing the analysis parameters, followed by the results of the scan. Output files are standardized by the software and not all parameters are applicable to analysis of powdered sediment samples. Parameters described as “Not applicable” indicate a setting that cannot be changed by the user, or they describe a setting for a component that was not attached to the device during the scan. The results are presented as intensity; a total number of 2-theta measurement (angle between transmitted beam and reflected beam) counts per second. The total number of 2-theta measurement counts per scan is indicated in line 78 of the text. Below is an example of the output text for one file in dataset, "XRD-000124_Theta_2-Theta.asc"

Why was the data set created?

The data gained through the analyses of cores collected from the New England Mud Patch help provide a comprehensive understanding of the nature and properties of the sediments found in this geographic location. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were performed to identify mineral composition and mineral component phases in powdered sediment and rock samples.

Each core was cut into sections on the ship during collection. The cores were then split into halves in the core lab. Samples with Sample IDs indicating "XRD" were taken from the split cores directly for X-ray diffraction, while samples with IDs indicating another purpose were scanned for X-ray diffraction after another non-destructive analysis, such as grain density. Some sample IDs indicate "no CaCO3," which indicates that carbonate minerals were removed from sample. See associated publication (Chaytor, 2021) for detailed information about the different sample types (sand, bulk, clay) and their specific methods of sample preparation completed prior to analysis. XRD, WC (water content) and SED (sediment) samples were dried in an oven at 100 degrees Celsius for 24 hours, then homogenized to a fine powder with a mortar and pestle. The powder was then pressed into a round Rigaku sample mount measuring 5mm by 0.2mm. Most samples contained enough powdered material to fill and scan two mounts. The associated publication, Chaytor (2021), provides additional methods and parameter selections associated with data collection. Person who carried out this activity:

At least one X-ray diffraction analysis was performed on each sample using the Rigaku Miniflex guidance software (version 2.1.0.4) to operate a Rigaku Miniflex 600 benchtop XRD unit. Second and third analyses of the same original sample were performed if time allowed, to ensure accuracy and removal of anomalies. The parameters and settings for every sample analysis run is listed at the top of each data output file in this set. The resulting data from each XRD analysis run was exported as an ASCII document file for accessibility. Each ASCII document in the dataset has a file name indicating the analysis ID number for the sample, assigned by the Rigaku Miniflex Guidance software. The file names can be linked to each individual sample by referencing EN577_XRD_ProfileID.csv, a spreadsheet of XRD analysis IDs their associated laboratory sample ID, assigned during sample collection. How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
Regular quality assurance and quality control checks are performed on the Rigaku Miniflex by running empty mounts, standards, and reference minerals. Multiple scans were run for certain samples to minimize anomalous peaks.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Of the 98 cores collected during the R/V Endeavor EN577 cruise, 17 cores were sampled and analyzed with X-ray diffraction. A total of 96 X-ray diffraction profiles are included in this dataset from 55 separate sediment samples. Cores chosen for analysis were those that were thought to represent the full range of sediments expected to be encountered. Any cores omitted from analysis were not included because the coring locations were in close proximity to previously analyzed cores.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
When processed for quantitative mineral phase identification, resulting mineral assemblage is generally consistent with the minerals expected to be present.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?
