Title:
Location of Sea-Floor Photographs acquired during USGS cruise 04011 (RAFA04011) from off Eastern Cape Cod, Massachusetts (RAFA04011_BOTPHOTOS.SHP, Geographic, NAD83)
Abstract:
This data set includes the locations and identifiers of 240 bottom photographs collected at 89 stations on topographic and backscatter data of the sea floor offshore east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The photos were collected with a modified Van Veen grab modified to carry still and video camera systems (small SEABOSS) during USGS survey 04011, conducted May 25- June 4, 2004.

Why was the data set created?

This data set was produced to ground-truth (verify) topography and backscatter intensity of the sea floor offshore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The acoustic data were collected with a multibeam sea floor mapping system during USGS survey 98015, conducted November 9 - 25, 1998.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: Jul-2004 (process 1 of 4)
Navigation and time recorded on videotape were used to identify and register the still photographs. These data and identifiers were manually entered into spreadsheet software. Shapefiles were created in ArcView from the ASCII comma-delimited files exported from the spreadsheet application. Person who carried out this activity:

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.30 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent. 3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
All attributes were checked in a consistent manner
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
Navigation was by differential GPS; positional accuracy to less than 10 m.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Locations of all still photographs of the sea floor collected during the R/V RAFAEL cruise 04011 were included in this data set.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on this data.
