Abstract:
As part of a larger investigation to understand groundwater-surface water interactions in Greenwich Bay, Rhode Island, a geophysical survey was conducted from a small research boat on 14-15 May 2009. The specific research objective was to gain an improved understanding of the role of direct groundwater discharge in delivery of excess nitrogen to the bay, which may have contributed to the development of low-oxygen conditions in waters of the bay and associated fish kills. Data collected in this survey included digital navigation information, continuous resistivity profiling (CRP) data, and point salinity measurements. The CRP method is a survey and data processing approach that is sensitive to differences in electrical properties of surface water and underlying porewater in sediments that have contrasting salinities. During the survey, Greenwich Bay salinity was approximately 27 ppm, so surface water would be expected to have low electrical resistivity (high conductivity), and any areas of active groundwater discharge from less salty aquifer sources would yield relatively higher resistivity values. Why was the data set created?

To provide the data acquisition logs in PDF format for USGS Field Activity 2009-021-FA. These logs contain valuable information with respect to the data collection, acquisition parameters, and survey operations during this field activity. The logs contain information about navigation, continuous resistivity profile data collection, and the water temperature, salinity and conductivity measurements.

    Date: 2013 (process 1 of 4)
    The logs contain information regarding data collection that includes the layout and relative position of the navigation and continuous resistivity profile (CRP) data acquisition systems on the boat. Details of the CRP system in terms of acquisition settings, streamer length, and configuration are included in these notes as well as line collection information. The chief scientist's notes contain additional information regarding data acquisition. Of particular value are the notes regarding the YSI 30 handheld system data acquisition locations and acquired values for surface water temperature, salinity, and specific conductance. Both of the handwritten logs were scanned and converted to PDF documents. Of note - the times recorded by Chuck Worley are in UTC, while the times recorded by John Bratton are in local time.
