A geophysical and geological survey was conducted at the mouth of the Connecticut River from Old Saybrook to Essex, Connecticut, in September 2012. Approximately 230 linear kilometers of digital Chirp subbottom (seismic-reflection) and 234-kilohertz interferometric sonar (bathymetric and backscatter) data were collected along with sediment samples, riverbed photographs, and (or) video at 88 sites within the geophysical survey area. Sediment grab samples were collected at 72 of the 88 sampling sites, video was acquired at 68 sites, and photographs of the river bottom were taken at 38 sites. These survey data are used to characterize the riverbed by identifying sediment-texture and riverbed morphology. More information can be found on the web page for the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center field activity: https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2012-024-FA. Data collected during the 2012 survey can be obtained here: https://doi.org/10.5066/F7PG1Q7V.
To provide the data acquisition logs. This logbook is invaluable in sorting out issues and problems related to data acquisition. The log book contains information about navigation, seismic and swath sonar acquisition, and the collection of sediment sample, video and photograph dataset.
More information can be found on the WHCMSC Field Activity webpage: https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2012-024-FA. Data collected during the 2012 survey can be obtained here: https://doi.org/10.5066/F7PG1Q7V.

This logbook contains information and notes kept during the geophysical and sampling survey. Corrections were made as they were noticed and updated as needed in the handwritten marked-up version and the cleaned up version of the logbook.
This logbook was maintained during U.S. Geological Survey Field Activity 2012-024-FA conducted in the Connecticut River in 2012. The original Excel file was printed and marked up by hand as the data were processed to document some additional acquisition and processing notes as well as correct log-keeping errors made in the original log. A cleaned up version of the logbook is also provided.
This file represents the official, final acquisition log for USGS Field Activity 2012-024-FA.
The logbook was maintained by the technical and scientific staff during data acquisition. The PDF is a scan of the printed original Excel spreadsheet which contains information about navigation systems, swath sonar and seismic-reflection systems, sediment sampling information and other misc notes from the survey.

To make the published logbook more easily readable, a cleaned up version of the original logbook was made. Handwritten notes on the scanned version were added/updated on the original log. The cleaned-up logbook is included here as a PDF in gray-scale without the background cell colors that may make the scanned version difficult to read. This cleaned up PDF is called 2012-024-FA_logbook_clean.pdf

The spreadsheet in the PDF (2012-024-FA_logbook_scanned.pdf) contains the following columns for pages 1-13 that are relevant to the geophysical portion of field activity 2012-024-FA:
JD (Julian Day), Time UTC, SWATHplus line name, 424 (sgy) (seismic-reflection acquisition), HYPACK (*.JD) (navigation acquisition), SVP (sound velocity profile acquisition collected), Comments. Within the spreadsheet, the first several rows describe the acquisition equipment.
The definitions of the columns of data are as follows:
JD: Julian Day
Time UTC: Time in Coordinated Universal Time
Subx(*.sxr): Acquisition system for the SWATHplus interferometric sonar.
424 (*.sgy): Seismic-reflection acquisition system - EdgeTech 424 sub-bottom system.
SVP: sound velocity profiler used to acquire sound velocity within the water column. These data are generally used in conjunction with the multibeam echosounder to define the velocity structure of the water column and reduce refraction artifacts in the swath sonar data.
Comments: Additional comments about data acquisition for all systems on the USGS Field Activity 2012-024-FA.
The sampling portion of the survey began on Friday Sept 21. The format of the spreadsheet changed beginning on page 14 to the following columns:
JD (Julian Day), Station Number, Time UTC, depth in feet, DVD time, DVD number, Tape number, sample, still number, Target station, comment. Within the spreadsheet, the first several rows describe the acquisition equipment.
The definitions of the columns of data are as follows:
JD: Julian Day
Sta#: sampling site number or name
Time UTC: Time in Coordinated Universal Time
depth_ft; DVD time, DVD#, Tape#, still_no: NONE OF THESE FIELDS WERE USED
sample: this was marked as Y (yes) or N (no); indicating if a sample was successful
Tgt_sta: This was a preset value of the target sampling station. As target sites were occupied, the new sequential station numbering system was used to assign site numbers.
Comments: Additional comments about data acquisition for all systems on the USGS Field Activity 2012-024-FA. This often includes a qualitative visual observation of the sediment that was collected. This observation should not be used, please refer to the sediment sample dataset for laboratory analyses (https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/data/field-activity-data/2012-024-FA/data/samples/2012-024-FA_samples.zip)
Not all of the fields in the logbook were used. Although some notes and updates were made to the logbook, additional errors in the log-keeping may exist that have not been corrected.
The cleaned up version of the logbook (2012-024-FA_logbook_clean.pdf) has the same column headings as described above for the scanned version.
