Accurate data and maps of sea-floor geology are important first steps toward protecting habitat, delineating marine resources, and assessing environmental changes due to natural or human effects. Initiated in 2003, the primary objective of the Geologic Mapping of the Massachusetts Sea Floor program is to develop regional geologic framework information for the management of coastal and marine resources. The program is focused on the inshore waters (primarily 5-30 meters deep, although the region surveyed in this field activity includes waters up to 90 meters deep) of Massachusetts. This dataset, collected aboard the Ocean Survey Vessel (OSV) Bold as part of the Geologic Mapping of the Massachusetts Sea Floor Program, is from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) sampling survey 2012-035-FA (August 21-27, 2012) by the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management with partners from the Massachusetts Bays Program, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. During the survey, surficial sediment samples and bottom still and video imagery were collected in Ipswich Bay and Massachusetts Bay, Massachusetts.
This dataset provides the data acquisition log maintained during USGS survey 2012-035-FA. The logbook contains information about navigation and the collection of sediment samples, video, and photographs. It is invaluable in sorting out issues and problems related to data acquisition.
During the survey, bottom still and video imagery was taken at each station (see shapefiles 2012-035-FA_photos.shp and 2012-035-FA_videos.shp available from the larger work citation; see the Coastal and Marine Geology Program Video and Photograph Portal to view the bottom videos [Golden and others, 2015; link available from the cross-reference citation]). Physical sediment samples were also collected at many stations and analyzed for grain size (see shapefile 2012-035-FA_samples.shp available from the larger work citation) and benthic infauna (see report by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management [2013] available from the cross-reference citation). This logbook contains information and notes kept during the sea floor sampling survey. The logbook was not checked for accuracy, so errors in the log keeping may exist.
This logbook was maintained during USGS field activity 2012-035-FA. The bounding coordinates are from the spatial extent of the navigation data, which includes data logged during the transits en route to, returning from, and between the sampling sites.
This file represents the original acquisition log for USGS field activity 2012-035-FA.
The logbook was maintained during USGS survey 2012-035-FA by the technical and scientific staff as an Excel spreadsheet. It contains information about navigation systems, sediment sampling, bottom photo and video acquisition, and other miscellaneous notes from the survey.

The spreadsheet contains the following columns that are relevant to the sampling survey for field activity 2012-035-FA:
JD (Julian day), station number, time in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), depth in feet, DVD time, DVD number, tape number, sample, still number, Hypack file, comment. Within the spreadsheet, the first several rows of the comment column describe the acquisition equipment.
The definitions of the columns of data are as follows:
JD: Julian day based on UTC time; Julian day is the integer number representing the interval of time in days since January 1 of the year (2012 for these data).
Sta#: sampling site number or name
time_UTC: time in UTC
depth_ft: approximate depth in feet as reported by the ship's crew
DVD time: [THIS FIELD WAS NOT USED]
DVD# and Tape#: These fields indicate when a new DVD or Digital8 (Digital Video - DV) tape was started and the DVD or tape number (these fields were not used the first couple days, so they sequentially begin at DVD-04/DV-04).
sample: This field was marked as Y (yes) or N (no) to indicate if a sediment sample collection was successful. Please note that N was used inconsistently and this field was occasionally left blank when a sediment sample was not successfully collected.
still_no: [THIS FIELD WAS NOT USED]
Hypack file: [THIS FIELD WAS NOT USED]
comment: Additional comments about data acquisition for all systems used during USGS field activity 2012-035-FA. VOB stands for vehicle (sampler) on bottom and VOFFB stands for vehicle off bottom. This field often includes a qualitative visual observation of the sediment that was collected. This observation should not be used; please refer to the sediment sample dataset for laboratory analyses (see shapefile 2012-035-FA_samples.shp available from the larger work citation).
[Unlabeled Column]: An extra column (L) contains some notes typed in the original Excel log, usually pertaining to watch changes and equipment issues.
Not all of the fields in the logbook were used. Errors in the log keeping may exist that have not been corrected.
