Description:
Abstract:
This CD-ROM contains digital high resolution seismic-reflection and bathymetric data collected during the USGS CORLISS 98014 cruise during Aug. 25 to Sept. 15, 1998.  The study area covers the Columbia River estuary, Willapa Bay, and the inner shelf off southern Washington.  The seismic-reflection data are stored as SEG-Y standard format that can be read and manipulated by most seismic processing software.  Much of the information specific to the data are contained in the headers of the SEG-Y format files.  The file system format is ISO 9660 Romeo which can be read with Windows 95/98, Windows NT, Unix, and Macintosh operating systems with the appropriate CD-ROM driver software installed.  The navigation and bathymetric data are stored as an ASCII file with the navigation and depth information logged mostly at a 10 second interval.   Blatantly bad bathymetric values were replaced with a value of 9999.  Depths are presented in meters from the sea surface (assuming a speed of sound in water of 1450 m/sec).  Both raw and tidally corrected depths are present in the navigation file.
Purpose:
A 21-day field operation was conducted during August and September, 1998 in the estuaries and on the inner continental shelf off the northern Oregon and southern Washington coast to generate reconnaissance maps of the seafloor geology and the shallow subsurface stratigraphy.  Sidescan sonar data were collected on the innermost shelf to document changes to the sea floor since 1997.  Sediment samples, bottom photographs, and video images were collected to document the sea floor geology.   Seismic-reflection profiles were collected to fill in gaps in the 1997 shelf-mapping program and to extend the framework geology from the shelf into the estuaries.  The Columbia River has provided huge amounts of sediment to this shelf during the Holocene transgression.  Previous studies have mapped the distribution and thickness of this modern deposit on the middle and outer shelf (Nittrouer and Sternberg, 1981; Wolf and others, 1997), however, its distribution on the inner shelf and its link to the adjacent estuarine systems were not as clearly understood because of incomplete data coverage in these areas.  Anthropogenic activity within the Columbia River drainage basin (agriculture, logging, construction of dams, and dredging of the estuary mouth) may have altered the sediment discharge from the river which, in turn, may be affecting sediment distribution on the shelf and in adjacent coastal environments.  The seismic-reflection data in concert with the sidescan-sonar imagery and sediment samples will provide an overall synthesis of the seafloor environment including the Holocene stratal geometry, the distribution of different sediment types, the distribution of mobile bedforms, outcrops of Pleistocene and older strata, and the locations of faults.  The goal of this project is to provide a regional synthesis of the offshore geology to support a wide variety of management decisions and to provide a basis for further process-oriented investigations.  The project is conducted cooperatively with the Washington State Department of Ecology and several universities including Portland State University, University of Wisconsin Eau Clair, University College of the Fraser Valley, Grays Harbor College, University of South Florida, and Oregon State University. Process_Description:
The subbottom data were recorded on the Delph Elics data logging system in Elics compressed format.  The data were converted from this compressed format to SEG-Y format using the conversion program provided on the Delph Elics system.  The boomer/sparker data were filtered with a bandpass of 200-3000 Hz at the acquisition step along with a 3-9 dB gain.   The sound source for lines 17, 20-24, and 30-32 was a sparker system.  In the fresh water of the Columbia River (lines 18, 19, and 25-28) a Huntec electro-mechanical 'boomer' system was used as the sound source.  A Benthos hydrophone array was used on all the lines for the acquisition.

Process_Description:
The original metadata file was extracted from the CD-ROM publication. The publication is not available online. The original metadata was only available in HTML format, so the HTML was converted to TEXT using Microsoft Word, and then CNS v. 2.8.6 (chew and spit) metadata pre-parse was used to further format the metadata. Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Added the link to the field activity page in the Identification section. Added online links to the data in the Distribution section. The information in the quantitative horizontal accuracy assessment was moved to the horizontal positional accuracy report. Had to move the coordinate system units to the entity and attribute overview because the seconds of arc are not accepted by the CSDGM format. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The data were acquired using a Huntec electro-mechanical sound source or a sparker source system powered by an ORE Geopulse power supply and a Benthos streamer as the receiver.  Seismic data were logged digitally with the Delph Elics seismic acquisition system.  The field data were reformatted to SEG-Y format and were checked for quality with the SEISMIC UNIX seismic processing software and are archived on this CD-ROM.  The SEG-Y format is described in detail by Barry and others (1975).  The files are standard 16-bit unsigned integer SEG-Y format.  The SEG-Y files consist of shot files with one trace per shot.  There are 3000 samples per trace.  The sample interval is 83 microsec. which resulted in a trace length of 250 ms.  The boomer or sparker was fired at a rate of 0.5 seconds.  The 3.5 kHz data were collected concurrently with the boomer/sparker data and logged on the Delph Elics seismic acquisition system.  These files are in standard 16-bit unsigned integer SEG-Y format consisting of one trace per shot.  There are 1200 samples per trace at a sample interval of 83 microsecs.  The sample record length was 100 ms with the firing rate set at 0.25 seconds. The navigation in the header is actually in seconds of arc, but the CSDGM format doesn't accept that as a valid unit.
