Title:
Archive of Boomer Subbottom Data Collected During USGS Cruise DIAN 96040, Fire Island, New York, 4-24 September 1996
Abstract:
This DVD-ROM contains digital high resolution seismic reflection data collected during the USGS DIAN 97011 cruise. The coverage is the nearshore of Long Island, NY in the vicinity of Fire Island. The seismic-reflection data are stored as SEG-Y standard format that can be read and manipulated by most seismic-processing software. Much of the information specific to the data are contained in the headers of the SEG-Y format files. The file system format is ISO 9660 which can be read with DOS, Unix, and MAC operating systems with the appropriate DVD-ROM driver software installed.
Supplemental_Information:
For more information on the seismic surveys see https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=1996-040-FA
These data are also available via GeoMapApp (http://www.geomapapp.org/) and Virtual Ocean ( http://www.virtualocean.org/) earth science exploration and visualization applications.

  7. How does the data set describe geographic features?
    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The data were acquired using an ORE/ Huntec boomer seismic profiling system. A Geopulse or Huntec electro-mechanical source was used. ITI and Benthos streamers were the receivers. Seismic data were logged digitally with the Mudseis acquisition system. The SEG-Y data were checked for quality with SIOSEIS seismic processing software and are archived on this DVD-ROM. The SEG-Y format is described in detail by Barry and others (1975). The files are in standard 16-bit integer SEG-Y format. The SEG-Y files consist of shot files with one or two traces per shot depending if one or two channels were recorded. Channel one was an ITI streamer and channel 2 when recorded was a Benthos streamer. There are 1600 samples per trace. The sample rate was 0.125 ms which resulted in a trace length of 200 ms. The boomer was fired at a rate of 0.5 seconds.

Why was the data set created?

In 1995, the USGS Woods Hole Field Center, in Cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, began a program designed to map the seafloor offshore of the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area; the most heavily populated, and one of the most impacted coastal regions of the United States. The ultimate goal of this program is to provide an overall synthesis of the sea floor environment, including surficial sediment texture, subsurface geometry, and anthropogenic impact (e.g. ocean dumping, trawling, channel dredging), through the use and analysis of sidescan-sonar and subbottom mapping techniques. This regional synthesis will support a wide range of management decisions and will provide a basis for further process-oriented investigations.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: May-1997 (process 1 of 6)
The subbottom data were recorded on the Mudseis data acquisition system in SEG-Y format. The conversion program processSegy was used to renumber the traces as trace 1 or traces 1 and 2 for 2-channel data and fill out the SEG-Y EBCDIC reel header. Traces were renumbered because the Mudseis system begins with trace 0 instead of 1. The data were filtered with a low pass of 300 Hz and a high pass of 3000 Hz at the acquistion step alnong with a 48 db gain. Person who carried out this activity:

Converted the metadata from HTML to a TEXT version using CNS v. 2.8.4 (chew and spit) metadata pre-parser. Once converted used TKME to fix some problems with the metadata. The fixes include: adding ISO keywords, adding a link to the online publication, deleting empty elements, adding the decimal to the denominator of flattening ratio in the geodetic model. Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. Added the Larger Work Citation. The distribution format name was modified in an attempt to be more consistent with other metadata files of the same data format. Modified occurrences indicating CD-ROM to DVD. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent. Additional edits were probably made to the original metadata by someone else who did not document what they changed.
