This data set shows the locations of stations, samples, photographs and videos collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in the New York Bight on four research cruises carried out between 1996 and 2000.
The data were collected as part of studies to map the sea floor (Butman and others (1998), Butman (2002)) and to develop an understanding of the transport and long-term fate of sediments and associated contaminants in the New York Bight (Mecray and others, 1999). The images and texture data were collected to provide direct observations of the sea floor geology and to aid in the interpretation of backscatter intensity data obtained from sidescan sonar and multibeam surveys of the sea floor.

These bottom photographs, video, and sediment texture data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey on four different research cruises. Bradford Butman was chief scientist on the RV Alpha and Omega, Oceanus, and Endeavor cruises. William Schwab led the Seaward Explorer cruise. Dann Blackwood was responsible for maintaining and running the camera systems at sea. Marilyn Buchholtz ten Brink and Ellen Mecray were responsible for sediment sampling. Ben Gutierrez compiled the photographs and did the initial report layout. Donna Newman edited the report for compliance with USGS publication standards. Tammie Middleton did the metadata.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Version 5.0 (Build 2195) Service Pack 2; ESRI ArcView 3.2
The locations of the station location, sediment sample location, photograph location, and video location were determined using a differential Global Positionning System (GPS). The grain size charactersitcs were measured in the laboratory using methods described in the U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 00-358 by L.J. Poppe and C.F. Polloni.
N/A
This data set contains all of the stations occupied on four USGS cruises where bottom samples and/or sea floor photographs and video were collected.
These data were navigated with a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS); they are accurate to about +/- 3 meters, horizontally.
These data are in the form of geographic coordinates. No manipulation of the data were necessary.
The textural characteristics of the sediments from these cruises were determined at the USGS Woods Hole Field Center Sediment Laboratory. The sediment grain size distribution was measured using a combination of mechanical sieves or a rapid sediment analyzer to measure the sediment fraction greater than 63 microns in diameter, and a coulter counter to measure the abundance of particles less than 63 microns in diameter.
The bottom photographs that are included with this publication were recorded on 35 mm film. After developing, the film was used to create a digital archive of the photographs on CD-ROM. The digital photos were stored as .PCD files which were later converted to .JPG images for use in this publication.
During bottom sampling, video of the sea floor was recorded to Hi-8 mm video tape. Video excerpts were digitized and included in this publication.
2001
Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Added online links to the data in the distribution section. Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. Added the ISO theme keywords. Added information to the entity and attribute overview section explaining that this metadata is for several individual dataset. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.

This single metadata file was originally written to describe numerous datasets. There are actually 6 detailed descriptions, with 5 of the detailed descriptions describing more than one individual dataset.
The individual cruises represented in these datasets are the Seaward Explorer (USGS cruise SEAX96004 also known as 1996-004-FA); Alpha and Omega (USGS cruise ALPH98020 also known as 1998-020-FA); Oceanus (USGS cruise OCNS9906 also known as 1999-006-FA); and the Endeavor (USGS cruise ENDV00013 also known as 2000-013-FA).
The first detailed description is for *stat.shp. These shapefiles indicate the stations locations were originally intended to link to pictures collected on the individual cruises.
The second detailed description is for *seds.shp. These shapefiles contain the location of the grab samples obtained on the individual cruises.
The third detailed description is for *pics.shp. These shapefiles contain the location of bottom photographs obtained on the individual cruises.
The fourth detailed description is for *vid.shp. These shapefiles contain the video survey tracklines of the individual cruises.
The fifth detailed description is for mov*.shp. These shapefiles contain the locations of video clips from the individaul cruises. The files movl*.shp are for large-format movies and movs*.shp are for the small format movies.
The sixth detailed description if for a single file (nymoors.shp) which is the shapefile indicating the location of instrumented moorings deployed by the USGS between Decmber 1999 and April 2000.
