Description:
Abstract:
This DVD-ROM contains digital high-resolution seismic-reflection data collected during the USGS ORGN00005 cruise. The seismic-reflection data are stored as SEG-Y standard format which can be read and manipulated by most seismic-processing software. Much of the information specific to the data are contained in the headers of the SEG-Y format files. Software is available on this DVD-ROM for viewing and processing the individual swaths using computer systems running a UNIX operating system.
Purpose:
In 1999, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council recommended that NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service establish two approximately 11-square-mile areas on the shelf edge in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico as no-fishing areas. One of the areas, the Madison-Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA) lies about 100 km south of Panama City, Florida. The second area, Steamboat Lumps MPA lies about 150 km SSE of Madison-Swanson. The high-resolution seismic-reflection data contained herein were collected as part of a larger study of the effectiveness of no-fishing reserves in protecting grouper spawning aggregations. These subbottom profiles will be used in conjunction with other data to map the seafloor geology and the character and extent of benthic habitats within and surrounding the two MPAs. They show the shape and acoustic impedence of the seafloor and the thicknesses and orientations of shallow subsurface horizons. These data may be helpful in the following applications:
1.choosing biological monitoring sites
2.management decisions in the MPAs
3.choosing sites for future MPAs
4.studies of paleo-sealevel
5.studies of the inter-relationships between seafloor geology and benthic ecology
6.studies of sedimentary geology and geologic framework of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico

Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
There is an apparent accuracy problem in this data set resulting from inaccurate fish depths recorded when the tow fish was raised or lowered. The result is a small vertical offset of the data that can be seen in the plotted profiles. The fish depth appears to adjust to the proper depth within a lag time of several seconds.

Process_Description:
The subbottom data were recorded on the ISIS data acquisition system in QMIPS format. Chirp subbottom channel extracted from raw QMIPS format sonar files and converted to 16-bit Int. SEG-Y format using program the QMIPSTOSEGY. Before the subbottom data are converted to SEG-Y format, the trace data were padded with zero amplitude samples to correct for the depth of the tow fish beneath the water surface. The SIS-1000 tow fish is equipped wiith a pressure transducer for recording the fish depth to the QMIPS file header. The pressure depth is also stored in the optional part of the SEG-Y trace header, so it can be used for further processing.

Process_Description:
Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.50 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. Other minor edits were performed (series information, adding the DOI link, etc.). Added the USGS Thesaurus and appropriate terms as well as the ISO 19115 Topic Categories thesaurus and appropriate term. Originally a DVD only publication, the distribution section was modified to include the format types that are available from the information available online. No attempt was made to add detailed entity and attribute information specific to the data. The user will need to reference the original Open-File Report for that information. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent. Additional edits were probably made to the original metadata by someone else who did not document what they changed (20210405). Tweaked a thesaurus name (20211117).
