The detailed nature of relict sediments resulting from and related to the Holocene transgression is revealed through this sedimentological study of a densely sampled corridor across the southern New England continental shelf. These shelf sediments can be divided into an inner and middle clean sand facies and an outer shelf muddy sand facies. Sediment data supports the view that the outer muddy sediment is relict; the sharp "mud line" at about 35 fathoms results not from modern deposition, but from the winnowing more extensive muddy sediment.
The purpose of this dataset is to provide a digital version of the sediment data published in McKinney and Friedman (1970) in a form that can be used to interpret the surficial sediment distribution off southern New England.

All attributes were entered and checked in a consistent manner.
No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on this data.
Navigation, textural statistics, percent fines, and identifiers are provided for sediments at 184 stations
Navigation was by DECCA system (New York Chain). Comparisons of the DECCA readings with ESSA charts showed a slight systematic variation, but no evaluation was attempted. Precise navigational accuracy is unknown.

The navigation and remaining source information were manually entered into digital form and together were imported from an ASCII text file into an ArcView table. The table was later converted to an event theme in ArcView and saved as the final shapefile.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
