This sediment database contains location, description, and
texture of samples taken during Cruise No. FERL01052 aboard
the NOAA Ship Ferrel. These samples were taken on East
and West Flower Garden Banks of the Flower Gardens
Bank National Marine Sanctuary between May 28, 2002
and June 3, 2002. The information collected during this
cruise is intended for a preliminary geologic interpretation of
the surficial sediment distribution in order to determine sites
for future sample collection. The interpretations presented
in this Open File Report are subject to change with future
data acquisition.
This ArcView shapefile contains the locations of sediment
samples collected and analyzed by the U. S. Geological
Survey, Woods Hole Field Center starting in May 2001 and
ending in December 2001. Distribution of this dataset
allows the user the ability to visualize the information in a
Geographic Information system.

ferltxtr.xls
The Excel spreadsheet contains the available data on grain
size for the bottom sediments produced by the USGS,
Woods Hole Field Center. The basic structure of the file is
a matrix where records are rows representing individual
samples and the columns contain information on sample
identification, navigation, classifications, analyzed
parameters, and comments.
The file ferltxtr.xls was converted to a .dbf file and was
imported into ArcView to create a table. This table was
then converted to an ArcView shapefile to be used as a
GIS layer in the project.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Modified the title to include more information. Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. Moved the cross-reference information to the larger work citation. Attributes were incompletely defined and had to be modified to meet the standard. Added digital transfer information and a link to the data in the distribution section. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
