A two-week field operation was conducted in the John Day Reservoir on the Columbia River to image the floor of the pool, to measure the distribution and thickness of post-impoundment sediment, and to verify these geophysical data with video photography and bottom sediment samples. The field program was a cooperative effort between the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Team of the Geologic Division and the USGS Columbia River Research Laboratory of the Biological Resources Division. The data collection was completed aboard the R/V ESTERO during September 13-27, 2000.
The interest in sediment accumulation in the reservoir was two-fold. First, it was unknown how effective this reservoir was as a sediment trap to material that otherwise would have been transported down-river to the estuary and eventually to the ocean. The recent erosion of beaches along the Washington coast has been attributed to a decreased contribution of sediment from the Columbia River to the coastal system due to the damming of the river. Second, sediment accumulation on the floors of reservoirs along the Columbia River has been suggested to be diminishing salmon spawning grounds. The extent of changes in habitat since construction of the John Day Dam, however, had not been documented. Common data sets were needed to address both of these questions, and for these reasons this geophysical and sampling program was undertaken.
This shapefile is intended to provide the locations for which bottom photographs of the floor of the John Day Reservoir have been acquired.

The navigation system is believed to have an accuracy better than 10m, but because the instrument is towed, this reduces the navigational accuracy. Assumed accruacy is 10 meters.
A log book was maintained during the sediment sampling portion of the cruise. This logbook contained information about the time that video imagery was being acquired (both in UTC time and VHS time), as well as the time and location fix of when a sampling attempt was made. The complete GPS data was recorded to the hard disk for all but the first sample taken. The video imagery was collected using the USGS SeaBOSS system and recorded to Hi8 8mm tape.
unknown
In the lab, the SeaBOSS tapes were played back on a Sony EVS-5000 Hi8 video player and the desired sections were written to DVD using a Pioneer PRV-9000 DVD recorder.

unknown
Once the DVD was finalized, the DVD was played on a Macintosh G4 computer, and individual frames were grabbed by the Snapz Pro X software. The time presented in these images is the time (hours, minutes, seconds) from the start of the video tape (VHS time).

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Added the link to the data catalog page in the Identification section, and a link to the publication in the Larger Work Citation. Added online link to the data in the Distribution section. Added a link to the field activity. The information in the quantitative horizontal accuracy assessment was moved to the horizontal positional accuracy report. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.

There are 2 instances where there is no image_time. In one case (JD01), the raw GPS was not recorded to hard disk, therefore the sample location is what was recorded in the original log book. In another case (JD20), no video was recorded corresponding to the sampler deployment. Although the attempt was made to grab an image from the video close to when the sediment sample was acquired, this was not always possible. Therefore, these locations refer to when/where the image was acquired, not the corresponding grab sample.
