Why was the data set created?

This GIS data overlay is a point shapefile of hourly time fixes for GLORIA cruise Farn85-1 (WHSC 85027).

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
    FARN85-1.DAT (source 1 of 1)
Twichell, D., and Paskevich, V., 1996, GLORIA sidescan sonar and navigation field data collected in the Gulf of Mexico: Open-File Report 96-707, U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, VA.

The ASCII text file containing hourly time fixes were copied from the publication CD-ROM and used to create the GIS data layer.
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 02-Aug-2005 (process 1 of 7)
Navigation data copied from Open-File Report 96-707 where it was stored as an ASCII file (FARN85-1.DAT), imported to Microsoft Excel where a header was added to identify the fields, and hourly fixes were selected from the two-minute fix navigation. The data were exported form Excel as a comma delimited text file that was named farn85-1_hr.txt. The identification of the fields are: 1. Latitude, 2. Longitude, 3. Year, 4. Month, 5. Day, 6. Hour, 7. Minute, 8. Second, 9. Depth (m-corr) - correction using Carter's Tables, 10. Depth (m-uncorr) - uncorrected water depth. Two additional fields were added to the file: Jday which contains the Julian day and Label which contains an hourly annotation. Person who carried out this activity:

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The link to the data in the Identification_Information section had to be fixed. The link to the data in the Distribution_Information section had to be fixed. Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. The link to the larger work citation had to be fixed. The links to the browse graphics had to be fixed. Added an online link to the cross-reference. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
