Abstract:

This GIS overlay is a component of the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Science Center's, Gulf of Mexico GIS database. The Gulf of Mexico GIS database is intended to organize and display USGS held data and provide on-line (WWW) access to the data and/or metadata.

Purpose:

This GIS data layer shows the areas of high acoustic backscatter on the GLORIA sidescan sonar image form the Gulf of Mexico. The interpretation was completed by David Twichell using the GLORIA image in concert with the multibeam bathymetry to identify areas of high backscatter that are not associated with steep slopes.

This interpretive layer shows the areas of high backscatter on the GLORIA image that are not associated with steep topography or mass-wasting deposits. The shapefile was created in ArcView using 250 m GLORIA sidescan image (gloria.tif) to identify areas of high backscatter. Only those areas that were not associated with steep slopes (derived from comparing This GIS data layer with a slope steepness map derived from the multibeam bathymetry) nor mass-wasting deposits (derived from comparing This GIS data layer with the masswasting shapefile) were included in This GIS data layer.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The link to the data in the Distribution_Information section had to be fixed. Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. The link to the larger work citation had to be fixed. The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
