This GIS overlay is a component of the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Science Center's, Gulf of Mexico GIS database. The Gulf of Mexico GIS database is intended to organize and display USGS held data and provide on-line (WWW) access to the data and/or metadata.
This GIS data layer shows the distribution of mass-wasting deposits in the Gulf of Mexico. The interpretation was completed by David Twichell using the GLORIA image, multibeam bathymetry, high-resolution seismic profiles, and cores to identify areas of mass wasting. Some of the mass-wasting deposits were reported in publicatons by Paskevich (2000) and Twichell and others (1990; 1991; 2000), while others are reported for the first time here.

Locations of some mass-wasting deposits were derived from this report
This interpretive layer shows the distribution of mass-wasting deposits in the deep-water part of the Gulf of Mexico. The shapefile was created in ArcView using 250 m GLORIA sidescan image (gloria.tif) to interpolate between known areas of mass wasting that had been identified on widely spaced high-resolution seismic profiles, and in short cores. The mass-wasting deposits were differentiated into Terrigenous mass-wasting deposits, Carbonate debris flow deposits, and Carabonate talus deposits.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. The link to the larger work citation had to be fixed. The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.

Character string
The DESCRIPTION attribute of This GIS data layer divides the mass-wasting deposits into three categories depending on the sediment type. The categories are:
Carbonate debris flow deposits - carbonate sediment that was deposited as debris flows.
Carbonate talus deposits - large clasts of carbonate material that have failed from the Florida Escarpment
Terrigenous mass-wasting - mass-wasting deposits in terrigenous sediment that have not been differentiated by process.
