Description:
Abstract:
In 1999, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in partnership with the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, began a study to investigate processes affecting shoreline change along the northern coast of South Carolina, focusing on the Grand Strand region. Previous work along the U.S. Atlantic coast shows that the structure and composition of older geologic strata located seaward of the coast heavily influences the coastal behavior of areas with limited sediment supply, such as the Grand Strand. By defining this geologic framework and identifying the transport pathways and sinks of sediment, geoscientists are developing conceptual models of the present-day physical processes shaping the South Carolina coast. The primary objectives of this research effort are: 1) to provide a regional synthesis of the shallow geologic framework underlying the coastal upland, shoreface and inner continental shelf, and define its role in coastal evolution and modern beach behavior; 2) to identify and model the physical processes affecting coastal ocean circulation and sediment transport, and to define their role in shaping the modern shoreline; and 3) to identify sediment sources and transport pathways; leading to construction of a regional sediment budget.
Purpose:
This data set is a compilation of USGS Hydrography data (7.5 Minute Quadrangle (1:24000) - digital line graphics) that have been modified to form a seamless background layer within the Grand Strand study area. Unmodified versions of the individual quads can be downloaded free of charge from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources GIS Data Clearinghouse - http://www.dnr.sc.gov/GIS/gisdownload.html

Process_Description:
Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Fixed links in entity and attribute overview section. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The National Hydrography Dataset is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that encodes information about naturally occurring and constructed bodies of water, paths through which water flows, and related entities. The information encoded about features includes classification by type, other characteristics, a unique common identifier, the feature length or area, and (rarely) elevation of the surface of water pools and a description of the stage of the elevation. For reaches, encoded information includes a reach code, the date the reach code was assigned, a unique common identifier, the reach length or area, and, for transport reaches, the stream level. Names and their identifiers in the Geographic Names Information System, are assigned to reaches or, if no reach is available, to features. The data also contain relations among reaches that encode the direction of water flow, metadata, and information that supports the exchange of future updates and improvements to the data. The names and definitions of all feature types, characteristics, and values are in U.S. Geological Survey, 1999, Standards for National Hydrography Dataset: Reston, Virginia, U.S. Geological Survey. A link to the document provided in the original metadata (mapping.usgs.gov/standards/) is no longer valid. Information about tables and fields in the data are available from the user documentation for the National Hydrography Dataset.
