Abstract:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provide a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, show the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provide information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from multibeam echo-sounder and sidescan sonar data collected in the vicinity of Quicks Hole, a passage through the Elizabeth Islands that extend in a chain southwestward off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In June 2005, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconaissance survey.

The original multibeam bathymetric data acquired with Reson 8101 and 8125 echosounder systems during NOAA cruise H11076 aboard the NOAA ship Thomas Jefferson were processed and exported as a hill-shaded color-encoded GeoTIFF (.tif) image in UTM Zone 19.

The multibeam data was acquired in XTF (extended Triton data format), recorded digitally through an ISIS data acquisition system, and processed using CARIS HIPS (Hydrographic Image Processing System) software for quality control, to incorporate sound velocity and tidal corrections, and to produce a base surface at 1-m resolution. Among other formats (e.g. .txt and .gutm), the data were exported in GeoTIFF (.tif) format in UTM Zone 19. As part of the process creating the GeoTiff, the grid was hill-shaded (sun-illuminated) with the sun at an azimuth of 315, an altitude angle above the horizon of ~45, a verticle exaggeration of ~5x , and displayed with a continous color pallete.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.30 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. The original metadata specified the WGS84 as the ellipsoid name, but that is in conflict with the horizontal datum name and other geodetic model paramters specified, so that was changed to Geodetic Reference System 80. Both geographic and a planar coordinate system were present, the planar one was removed with the resolution transferred to the geographic. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
