    <descript>
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provide a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, show the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provide information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from multibeam echo-sounder and sidescan sonar data collected in Great Round Shoal Channel, a passage through the shoals at the eastern entrance to Nantucket Sound, off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In June 2006, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconnaissance survey.
      <purpose>To release an interpretation of the sedimentary environments generated from data collected during NOAA survey H11079 in Great Round Shoal Channel, offshore Massachusetts, in geographic.</purpose>

        <procdesc>The geographic GeoTIFF image of the sidescan sonar and multibeam data from survey H11079 and the point data layer from grain-size analyses of sediments collected from this survey area were imported into the ArcView GIS project view. Sedimentary environments were interpreted based on tonal changes in the sidescan sonar imagey, the bathymetry and textural analyses. The interpreted sedimentary environments were outlined using the available graphic tools then converted to an ArcView shapefile for each environment. Thses shapefiles were merged into one file with the Geoprocessing Wizard extension.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. Minor fixes to the attribute format for some attributes were needed. An invalid link in the distribution section was removed. The original metadata specified the WGS84 as the ellipsoid name, but that is in conflict with the horizontal datum name and other geodetic model paramters specified, so the ellipsoid name was changed to Geodetic Reference System 80. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.</procdesc>
