Abstract:
These data were collected under a cooperative agreement with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and the U.S. Geological Survey, Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Woods Hole Science Center. Initiated in 2003, the primary objective of this program is to develop regional geologic framework information for the management of coastal and marine resources. Accurate data and maps of sea-floor geology are important first steps toward protecting fish habitat, delineating marine reserves, and assessing environmental changes due to natural or human impacts. The project is focused on the inshore waters (5-30 m deep) of Massachusetts between the New Hampshire border and Cape Cod Bay. Data collected for the mapping cooperative have been released in a series of USGS Open-File Reports <(http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/project-pages/coastal_mass/html/current_map.html>). This spatial dataset is from the Cape Ann and Salisbury Beach Massachusetts project area. The data collected in two separate surveys in 2004 and 2005 and cover approximately 325 square kilometers of the inner continental shelf. High resolution bathymetry and backscatter intensity were collected in 2004 and 2005. Seismic profile data, sediment samples and bottom photography were also collected in 2005.

Why was the data set created?

This data set includes the locations, identifiers, grain-size data and(or) textural descriptions of surficial sediments collected at 79 stations offshore Massachusetts in the Cape Ann to Salisbury Beach survey area. The sediments were collected with a modified Van Veen grab (large SEABed Observation and Sampling System (SEABOSS)) during USGS survey 05005, conducted September 18-20, 2005 aboard the R/V Connecticut. This data set was collected to ground-truth (verify) the geophysical data sets that were acquired immediately preceding this sampling survey (September 8-16, 2005). Samples were analyzed in the sediment laboratory at the USGS Woods Hole Science Center.

    Seventy-nine samples were collected aboard the R/V Connecticut (USGS survey 05005) with a Van Veen grab sampler (Blackwood and Parolski, 2001) that was also equipped with a digital-still and video camera. Eight additional stations were occupied and "sampled" with the photographs and video where sediment samples could not be collected. Those stations are not represented in this dataset (see the Video Trackline shapefile from USGS OFR 2007-1373 for the locations of those data). Person who carried out this activity:

    Navigation for survey 05005 used Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS from a base station established by USGS for this survey. RTK-GPS provides horizontal positional accuracies on the decimeter scale. The recorded position of each sediment sample is actually the position of the GPS antenna on the survey vessel, not the SEABOSS sampler. No layback or offset was applied to the recorded position. The SEABOSS was deployed approximately 10 meters astern of the GPS antenna and may drift additionally away from the survey vessel when deployed to the seafloor. Based on the various sources for horizontal offsets, a conservative estimate the horizontal accuracy of the SEABOSS location is 30-40 meters.

    All available grain-size data collected during the R/V Connecticut survey 05005 are included in this data set. Eighty-seven stations were occupied with the SEABOSS; however sediment samples were only collected at 79 stations where collecting a sample would not damage the sampling equipment (e.g. no samples were collected in areas with cobble, boulder or rocky seabed, as identified in real-time by video and photos). Note there is a sample 14A but no analysis for sample 14B (which has been removed from the database).
