Title:
Line Navigation for the Boomer High-Resolution Seismic-Reflection Profiles Collected During U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) R/V Rafael Cruise 08034 off Edgartown, Massachusetts (08034_BOOMERNAVLINE.SHP)
Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the combined single-beam and multibeam echo-sounder data and sidescan-sonar data collected in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts. During August 2008 seismic-reflection profiles (Boomer and Chirp) were acquired, and during September 2008 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of two ground-truth reconnaissance surveys.

This data set includes the line navigation for boomer seismic-reflection data collected along five lines in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, offshore Massachusetts. The seismic data were collected during USGS survey 08034, conducted August 20, 2008. This data set was acquired to ground-truth acoustic data collected during NOAA hydrographic survey H11346. The seismic data were collected during USGS survey 08034, conducted August 20, 2008. Navigation went down between 16:08:06 and 16:12:13, so line file 3 is interpolated.

Why was the data set created?

To release a polyline data set for the Boomer seismic-reflection data collected along five lines in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, offshore Massachusetts. The Boomer data were collected to interpret the deeper stratigraphy beneath Edgartown Harbor.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
The source information was incomplete and had to be modified to meet the standard. (source 1 of 1)

    Date: 20-Aug-2008 (process 1 of 9)
High-resolution Boomer seismic-reflection data were collected August 20 aboard the Research Vessel Rafael. The seismic data were acquired digitally along 5 lines totaling approximately 27.6 km with a GeoAcoustics Boomer source, GeoAcoustics power supply, Benthos AQ4 single-channel streamer, and Chesapeake Systems SonarWiz v4.03.0089 acquisition software. The Boomer was fired at a rate of 0.5 seconds at a power output of 175 joules. The received signal was filtered between 100-3000 Hz with a GeoPulse receiver. The trace data recorded for 266 ms with a sample rate of 0.533 ms in standard SEG-Y format. Person who carried out this activity:

A script was run that used Seismic Unix 4.0 to read the SEG-Y files and extract shot number, horizontal position, year, day, and time of day. AWK was used to parse the ASCII data and convert position in seconds of arc to decimal degrees. The ASCII file was filtered using Linux sort to keep only the unique horizontal positions output to a comma delimited file. Person who carried out this activity:

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.30 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent. How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
All attributes were checked in a consistent manner.
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Navigation was by DGPS; positional accuracy to less than 10 m. The Boomer source was towed astern and to the port side of the RV Rafael on the water surface. The single-channel hydrophone streamer was towed astern and to the starboard side and approximately 0.5 meters below the water surface. The layback offset was accounted for in the positional data recorded in the SEG-Y headers. The layback position was 8 meters aft of the vessel.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
The vertical position was local sea level and there have been no corrections to a datum or for tidal variations.
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
All available trackline data along Boomer seismic acquisition lines collected during the RV Rafael cruise 08034 is included in this data set. There is no navigation for line 3 between shot points 794 and 1449. For this segment of line 3, the line is a linear interpolation between shots 794 and 1449.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on this data.
