    <descript>
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (MA CZM), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of the Massachusetts coastline, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from multibeam echo-sounder and sidescan-sonar data collected in the vicinity of Edgartown Harbor, Massachusetts. During August 2008 seismic-reflection profiles (Boomer and Chirp) were acquired, and during September 2008 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of two ground-truth reconnaissance surveys.
      <purpose>To release the Chirp seismic profiles collected to ground-truth acoustic data (single-beam and multibeam bathymetry and sidescan sonar imagery) collected during NOAA hydrographic survey H11346. The Chirp data were collected to interpret the shallower stratigraphy beneath Edgartown Harbor.</purpose>
      <supplinf>For more information on the seismic surveys see https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=2008-034-FA
These data are also available via GeoMapApp (http://www.geomapapp.org/) and Virtual Ocean ( http://www.virtualocean.org/) earth science exploration and visualization applications.</supplinf>

        <procdesc>Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.36 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). Attempted to modify http to https where appropriate. Added an online linke for a cross-reference. The source information only contained a date, so was deleted. The geographic coordinate units were listed as seconds of arc, which violates the standard. The value was changed to decimal degrees. The assumption is that seconds of arc refers to information in the SEG-Y header. Added a digital form so that the JPEG and SEG-Y each had a section. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.</procdesc>

    <overview>
      <eaover>This data set includes 3.5-kHz Chirp seismic-reflection data in SEG-Y and JPEG formats collected along 17 lines in the vicinity of Edgartown, offshore Massachusetts. The seismic data were collected during USGS survey 08034, conducted August 18-20, 2008. Each profile is available as a binary file in Society of Exploration Geophysicists SEG-Y rev 1 format and JPEG image format. A SEG-Y file consists of 1) a 3200-byte file identification record of EBCDIC encoded general information; 2) a 400-byte binary record with information such as sample rate and record length specific to the data set; and 3) multiple records, one seismic reflection trace per record. Each trace record is preceded by a 240-byte "trace header" containing information such as trace number and acquisition day and time specific to each trace. The trace data are represented as a time series of unitless 32-bit IEEE real numbers proportional to the reflection coefficient. The SEG-Y file is useful only if you have access to specialized software designed to process and display seismic reflection data. **In the original metadata, the Geographic_Coordinate_Units were listed as seconds of arc, which violates the standard. The assumption is that seconds of arc refers to information in the SEG-Y header.</eaover>
