These data were collected under a cooperative agreement with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC). Initiated in 2003, the primary objective of this program is to develop regional geologic framework information for the management of coastal and marine resources. Accurate data and maps of sea-floor geology are important first steps toward protecting fish habitat, delineating marine resources, and assessing environmental changes due to natural or human impacts. The project is focused on the inshore waters of coastal Massachusetts, primarily in water depths of 3-30 meters deep. Data collected for the mapping cooperative have been released in a series of USGS Open-File Reports (http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/project-pages/coastal_mass/html/current_map.html). The data collected in the study area located in northern Cape Cod Bay Massachusetts includes high-resolution geophysics (bathymetry, backscatter intensity, and seismic reflection), and ground validation (sediment samples, video tracklines, and bottom photographs). The data were collected during five separate surveys conducted between 2006 and 2008 and cover 480 square kilometers of the inner continental shelf.
More information about the individual USGS surveys conducted as part of the northern Cape Cod Bay project can be found on the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center Field Activity webpage:

The purpose of this polyline shapefile is to show bathymetric contours at 5 meter intervals derived from bathymetry collected during the four surveys (06012, 07001, 07002, 08002) in the northern Cape Cod Bay survey area.

The CONTOUR and Shape_Length attributes for this shapefile are generalized and described further in the processing step section of data quality below.
Bathymetric contours were simplified and smoothed to improve cartographic display of contours.
Small depth contours less than 500 meters in length were removed to improve cartographic display.
Generalize the input depth raster:
The input raster (ccb_bath_f) was smoothed and aggregated using ArcGIS 9.3 geoprocessing steps described below below:
1) Smooth input grid using a 5x5 mean filter with the Block Statistics Tool in ArcToolbox (ver. 9.3) Input raster = ccb_bath_f, Output raster = BlockSt_ccb_1, Neighborhood= Rectangle, Neighborhood Settings = 5 x 5, cell Statistics type = Mean, Ignore NoData in calculations=Unchecked.
2) Convert resolution of input raster (BlockSt_ccb_1) from 5-m per pixel to 50-m per pixel using the aggregate tool in ArcToolbox (ver. 9.3) Input raster = BlockSt_ccb_1, Output raster aggr10x, Cell Factor = 10 Aggregation technique = mean, Expand extent if needed = Unchecked, Ignore NoData in calculations = Unchecked

Calculate generalized depth contours from smoothed and aggregated input depth grid using ArcToolbox (ver. 9.3).
Created new File Geodatabase to store feature classes produced in this step. Both input depth grid and output feature class are in the UTM Zone 19, WGS84 Coordinate System.
1) Contour Input raster = ccbaybath50m, Output polyline features = CCBathCntr5mAll (feature class) Contour Interval = 5 Base Contour = 0 Z Factor = 1.
2) Make Feature Layer: This tool makes a feature layer using only contours with shape_length greater than 500 m to remove the small closed contours. Input Features = CCBathCntr5mAll, Output Layer = CCBathCntr5mAll_Layer, Expression = Shape_Length > 500
3) Simplify Line: Input Features = CCBathCntr5mAll_Layer, Output Feature Class = CCBathCntr5m_Simple250, Simplification Algorithm = Bend_Simplify, Reference Baseline = 250, Meters, Check for topological errors and Resolve topological errors options were both selected.
4) Smooth Line: Input Features = CCBathCntr5m_Simple250, Output Feature Class = CCBathCntr5m_SimpleSmooth, Smoothing Algorithm = Bezier_Interpolation Handling Topological Errors = No_Check

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.30 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The format of the time period of content had to be fixed. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
