Title:
Locations and analysis of sediment samples collected offshore of Massachusetts within Northern Cape Cod Bay(CCB_SedSamples Esri Shapefile, and ASCII text format, WGS84)
Abstract:
These data were collected under a cooperative agreement with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC). Initiated in 2003, the primary objective of this program is to develop regional geologic framework information for the management of coastal and marine resources. Accurate data and maps of sea-floor geology are important first steps toward protecting fish habitat, delineating marine resources, and assessing environmental changes due to natural or human impacts. The project is focused on the inshore waters of coastal Massachusetts, primarily in water depths of 3-30 meters deep. Data collected for the mapping cooperative have been released in a series of USGS Open-File Reports (http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/project-pages/coastal_mass/html/current_map.html). The data collected in the study area located in Northern Cape Cod Bay Massachusetts includes high-resolution geophysics (bathymetry, backscatter intensity, and seismic reflection), and ground validation (sediment samples, video tracklines, and bottom photographs). The data were collected during five separate surveys conducted between 2006 and 2008 and cover 480 square kilometers of the inner continental shelf. More information about the individual USGS surveys conducted as part of the northern Cape Cod Bay project can be found on the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center Field Activity webpage: 06012: http://quashnet.er.usgs.gov/data/2006/06012/ 07001: http://quashnet.er.usgs.gov/data/2007/07001/ 07002: http://quashnet.er.usgs.gov/data/2007/07002/ 07003: http://quashnet.er.usgs.gov/data/2007/07003/ 08002: http://quashnet.er.usgs.gov/data/2008/08002/

Why was the data set created?

The purpose of this data set is to record the locations and analysis data for the 98 sediment samples collected during USGS survey 07003, aboard the R/V Connecticut within the northern Cape Cod Bay survey area. The samples were collected to ground-truth (verify) the acoustic data sets that were acquired during USGS geophysical surveys 06012 (2006), 07001 (2007), 07002 (2007), and 08002 (2008). Samples were analyzed in the sediment laboratory at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center.

Samples were collected aboard the R/V Connecticut (USGS survey 07003) with a Van Veen grab sampler (Blackwood and Parolski, 2001) that was also equipped with a digital-still and video camera. Additional stations were occupied and "sampled" with the photographs and video where sediment samples could not be collected. Those stations are not represented in this dataset; see the SEABOSS Trackline shapefile in this report (USGS OFR 2010-1006) for the locations of those data. Person who carried out this activity:

Samples were analyzed in the sediment laboratory at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center. Coarse fraction determined by sieve; fine fraction determined by Coulter Counter. See Poppe, Williams, and Paskevich (2005) for analytical specifics. A sampling log file with site number, latitude, longitude, and approximate depth was provided to the sediment lab. A Microsoft Excel (2003) file (XLS) returned from the lab with the sediment analyses was saved as Comma Separated Value file (CSV). Person who carried out this activity:

In ArcMap (version 9.3), new depths were extracted from the final bathymetry grid (in this report) using the tool VACExtras (v2.1) - Extract Depth. The Extract Depth tool created a temporary column in the attribute table called "depth_temp" and the ArcMap field calculator was used to convert the negative elevation value to a positive depth value, replacing the existing values in the field "DEPTH_M." The depths for stations 2A, 2B, 4, 11, 168, 169, 170 and 171 fell outside the area surveyed by this mapping program with swath bathymetry and were therefore determined by the 30m NOAA Estuarine Bathymetry dataset and added to the table in a similar manner as described above. The ASCII comma-delimited file (csv) created in the previous step was manually edited using a Microsoft Excel and saved as a CSV file with the same filename [output files: CCB_SedSamples.shp, CCB_SedSamples.csv] Person who carried out this activity:

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.30 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The orignal metadata only had source information time period of content. In order to pass the metadata harvester, the rest of the required source information fields were populated. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent. Person who carried out this activity:

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
All attributes were checked in a consistent manner
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
Navigation for survey 07003 used differential Global Positioning System (GPS). The recorded position of each sediment sample is actually the position of the GPS antenna on the survey vessel, not the SEABOSS sampler. The SEABOSS was deployed approximately 5 meters astern of the GPS antenna off the ship's J-frame on the starboard side. No layback or offset was applied to the recorded position. In addition to the 5 meter offset the SEABOSS may drift away from the survey vessel when deployed to the seafloor. Based on the various sources for horizontal offsets, a conservative estimate the horizontal accuracy of the SEABOSS location is 20-30 meters.
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Only the subset of grain-size data collected during the R/V Connecticut survey 07003 that are within the northern Cape Cod survey area have been included in this spatial dataset. One-hundred nine stations were occupied with the SEABOSS sampler in the northern Cape Cod Bay survey area; however sediment samples were only collected at 98 stations where collecting a sample would not damage the sampling equipment. No samples were collected in areas with cobble, boulder or rocky seabed, as identified in real-time by video and photos. More than 180 sampling sites were occupied during survey 07003; and a total of 126 sediment samples were collected. The grain-size data from the 28 sites north of Brant Rock, Massachusetts are published in a previous data release (Barnhardt and others, 2010) focused on the Duxbury to Hull survey area.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
No additional checks for topological consistency were performed on these data. Gaps in sequential sample numbers may exist.
