The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of Long Island Sound, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder data and sidescan-sonar data collected north of Orient Point, New York. During April 2010, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconnaissance survey. For more information on the ground-truth survey see http://quashnet.er.usgs.gov/data/2010/10010/.

No additional checks for consistency were performed on this data.
All collected data were processed and used to produce this dataset.
Navigation was by differential GPS. CARIS HIPS was used to process bathymetry data including correcting for antenna offset.
The vertical resolution of the bathymetry data is approximately 0.5% of the water depth. Although there are no depth attributes associated with the GeoTIFF image, pixel values convey RGB values of individual cells. Warmer colors (e.g. red) are shallower depths; cooler colors are deeper.

Original processed multibeam bathymetric data.
Bathymetric data were acquired in extended Triton data format (XTF) and recorded digitally through an ISIS data acquisition system. Reson 8101 and 8125 multibeam echosounders hull-mounted on two 29' launches deployed from the NOAA ship Thomas Jefferson were used to acquire the sounding data. All positioning and attitude were determined with Trimble DSM212L DGPS receivers and Applanix POS/MV Model 320 v.4 inertial navigation systems. The data were processed using CARIS HIPS (Hydrographic Image Processing System) software for quality control, and to incorporate sound velocity and tidal corrections. Sound velocity corrections were derived using frequent SEACAT CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) profiles. Typically, a CTD cast was conducted every three to four hours of multibeam acquisition. Tidal zone corrections were calculated from data acquired at the New London, CT, and New Haven Harbor, CT, tidal gauges. The vertical resolution of the multibeam data is approximately 0.5% of the water depth. The data were gridded to 2-m resolution and saved as a CARIS HIPS database. Vertical datum is mean lower low water; X and Y units are meters; UTM Zone 18, NAD83.

The fieldsheet from survey H11446 (average depths, not the shoal based fieldsheets) was imported into the Fledermaus v6.7 program DMagic to make an equivalent digital terrain model (DTM) file. The floating point format for each sounding depth point is preserved during data import. Additionally, this fieldsheet was imported into DMagic as "gridded data", therefore re-gridding of data did not occur during the import process and thus preserved the original resolutions of the CARIS fieldsheet: H11446 2 meter cell size.

Using the Fledermaus v6.7 program Imageviewer, the shaded relief image created in the previous step was exported in the TIFF image format with an associated ESRI world file containing georeferencing information. The TIFF image is projected in the UTM coordinate system using zone 18N, and the datum is NAD 83.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). In the case of the depth resolution, the value of 9999 was entered to indicate that the original metadata did not contain the required information. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
