Abstract:
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of Long Island Sound, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. Interpretive data layers were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder data collected north of Duck Pond Point, New York. During April and May 2010, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired during 2 cruises as part of USGS ground-truth reconnaissance surveys of this area. Why was the data set created?

The purpose of this dataset is to release the locations, identifiers, grain-size data and(or) textural descriptions of surficial sediments collected at 23 stations on topographic and backscatter data of the sea floor in Long Island Sound, north of Duck Pond Point, New York. These stations were occupied during 2 cruises, 2010-010-FA aboard the RV Rafael and 2010-015-FA aboard the OSV Bold.

    Fifteen samples were collected with a Van Veen grab sampler (Blackwood and Parolski, 2001) equipped with a still and video camera during RV Rafael cruise 2010-010-FA. An additional 8 samples were collected on OSV Bold cruise 2010-015-FA, also with a Van Veen grab sampler. Samples were analyzed in the sediment laboratory at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center. Coarse fraction was determined by sieve; fine fraction was determined by Coulter Counter.
