Any spurious data points were removed during processing. Because this dataset is made up of data from multiple surveys, duplicate filenames likely exist for these survey lines; however, an additional attribute (called 'UniqueLine') was created during the processing of this dataset to make a unique identifier for each survey line segment.
Only the subset of swath-bathymetry trackline navigation collected within the Buzzards Bay study area during USGS field activities 2009-002-FA, 2010-004-FA, and 2011-004-FA are included in this spatial dataset. Trackline navigation for approximately 3,920 kilometers of additional swath-bathymetry data collected within Vineyard Sound, Massachusetts during these field activities were published in USGS Open-File Report 2012-1006 High-Resolution Geophysical Data from the Inner Continental Shelf: Vineyard Sound, Massachusetts (
http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2012/1006/).
This shapefile includes trackline navigation from all the swath bathymetric data that was collected within the survey area. However, only quality sonar data along the main survey lines were included in the final bathymetry grid that is found on this report (BB_Bathy5m). Noisy or poor quality data were not included in the grid. Data from some survey lines were omitted where they overlapped with equal or better quality data from adjacent lines (as was the case for the few lines that were less than several hundred meters long). Data along tie and transit lines were not included in the final grid. Also, data from the southern extent of line l131f1 were omitted as they extended beyond the survey area boundary into an area covered by a previous NOAA survey (see NOAA Survey H11076
ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/pub/coast/H10001-H12000/H11076/ and USGS Open File Report 2006-1357
http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2006/1357/).

This trackline dataset is a combination of navigation data along which swath bathymetry was collected by the USGS (with a 234 kHz Systems Engineering and Assessment Ltd. (SEA) SWATHplus interferometric sonar mounted on the M/V Megan T. Miller (2009 and 2010) and the M/V Scarlett Isabella (2011)). Data were acquired between May 2009 and May 2011.
USGS Configuration:
Survey: Survey lines were run at an average speed of 5 knots and were spaced 50-100 m apart to obtain overlapping swaths of data and full seafloor coverage.
Sonar: The SEA SWATHplus-M operates at a frequency of 234 kHz and a variable range (increased or decreased manually depending on water depth). The system was operated with a transmit power: 80 percent, a transmit length: 12 cycles (2009-002-FA and 2010-004-FA) or 43 cycles (2011-004-FA), 3072 samples per channel (2009-002-FA) or 4096 samples per channel (2010-004-FA and 2011-004-FA), and a variable range (increased or decreased depending on water depth).

This trackline dataset contains the selected tracklines of navigation data along which swath bathymetry was collected by the NOAA (with a 455 kHz multibeam-echosounder mounted on the NOAA Ship RUDE(2004)). Data were acquired between March and April 2004. These are the selected survey lines that were need to complete the final bathymetry grid. The USGS surveyed around this known area during survey 2009-002-FA to save time and money by making use of exisitng high-quality bathymetry data.
NOAA Configuration:
Survey: All data were collected by the NOAA Ship RUDE. Trackline spacing for survey H11319 was based on an estimate of 2.5 times the water depth to achieve overlapping swaths for full seafloor coverage. For this area survey lines were typically between 25-50m apart. Ship speed was determined such that the survey achieved a sampling rate of 3.2 pings per 3 meters of along track distance.
Sonar: The RESON SeaBat 8125 is a 0.5 degree (across-track) by 1 degree (along-track) beam angle system which operates at a frequency of 455 kHz and collects 240 individual soundings in a swath oriented perpendicular to the vessel track. The system is capable of ping rates ranging from 3.02 Hz to 40.05 Hz but for this survey, the maximum ping rate was set to 20 Hz.
Other: All bathymetry processing, including navigation editing, was done by NOAA Hydrographers. NOAA's Computer Aided Resource Information System (CARIS) directory was provided to the USGS. Refer to the Fall Data Acquisition and Processing Report (DAPR) and the Horizontal and Vertical Control Report, for detailed equipment, vessel configuration and setting information.

Process_Description:
Perl and AWK programming scripts were used to extract and subsample the navigation fixes stored in the CARIS HIPS database. The processing flow for this step follows: A. Extract navigation for each line in CARIS HDCS directory using Perl script do_CARIS_nav3.pl (which runs the CARIS program printfnav for all the lines in the HDCS dir). (Extracted navigation file is tab-delimited in format YYYY-JD HH:MM:SS:FFF DD.LAT DD.LONG SSSSS_VVVVV_YYYY-JD_LLLL AR where YYYY=year, JD=Julian Day, HH=hour, MM=minute, SS=seconds, FFF=fractions of a second, DD.LAT=latitude in decimal degrees, DD.LONG=longitude in decimal degrees, SSSSS=survey name, VVVVV=vessel name, LLLL=linename, AR=accepted or rejected navigation fix) This step creates the file combined.txt B. The navigation files extracted from CARIS HIPS contained 4-5 navigation fixes per second. These files were subsampled to produce files containing 1 fix per second using AWK to remove the fractions-of-a-second from the time column then grabbing the first occurrence of each second. > awk '{print $1" "substr($2,1,8)" "$3" "$4" "$5}' 2.combined.txt | awk '$2 != prev { print; prev = $2 }' > 3.BB_NAV_awked.txt C. AWK was used to eliminate spurious fixes outside the survey area and reformat the navigation for conversion from comma separated value (CSV) data to Esri point feature class > awk -F" " '{if(substr($4,1,3)>"-70" || substr($4,1,3)<"-71") print $0}' 2.BB_NAV_awked.txt | awk -F" " '{if(substr($3,1,2)>"40" || substr($3,1,2)<"41") print $0}' | awk -f reformat_CARIS2Arc_BuzzBay.awk > BB_bathyNAV_done.csv.

VAC Extras tool (version: 2.04 FeatConv - Points to Line v2; USGS in-house software) was then used within ArcMap (version 9.3) to convert the navigation points to a trackline shapefile. The 'UniqFile' field was used to define which points were used to generate each polyline feature, and the first occurrence of fields 'FileName', 'Year', 'JulDay', 'SurveyID', 'VehicleID', and 'Time' and the last occurrence of 'Time' were chosen to be included as attributes in the output shapefile. The trackline shapefile was checked to ensure there were no severely spurious navigation fixes. XTools Pro (version 7.1.0) for ArcGIS desktop was used (Table Operations - Table Restructure) to reorganize and add fields to the polyline shapefile's attribute table. Table attributes for the unique file name ('UniqFile'), filename ('FileName'), survey ID ("SurveyID'), year ('Year'), Julian day ('JulDay') of data collection, survey vessel name ('VehicleID'), start time ('TimeStart') and end time ('TimeEnd') of each line were already populated but renamed if necessary. Field for device used to collect the data ('DeviceID') was added and then populated using field calculator and the table editor in ArcMap (version 9.3). The length field ('Length_km') was also added and then populated using 'Calculate Geometry' (Property = Length, Use coordinate system of the data frame = WGS 1984 UTM Zone 19N, Unit = Kilometers), which can be accessed by right clicking on the attribute field name in the table view.

Process_Description:
Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.
