Advances in acquisition and processing technologies of bathymetric data have facilitated the creation of high-resolution bathymetric surfaces that approach the resolution of similar surfaces available for onshore investigations. These bathymetric terrain models provide a detailed representation of the Earth's subaqueous surface and, when combined with other geophysical and geological datasets, allow for interpretation of modern and ancient geological processes. Purpose: The purpose of this bathymetric terrain model is to provide a high-quality bathymetric surface of the Atlantic margin of the United States for current and future geological investigations. Logical_Consistency_Report: No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted. Completeness_Report: This grid is a compilation of bathymetric data collected during 33 separate surveys conducted between 1990 and 2015. Data were collected using different vessels and sonars, however, they were processed and edited using the same methods detailed below. Data from these surveys collected outside the area of interest (transit lines etc.) may not be included in this grid. Small data gaps within each grid were interpolated (if needed) and then exported as a GeoTIFF. Small differences between data coverage in the GeoTIFF and the corresponding Source shapefile (AtlanticMarginBathSource_V2) may exist Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The horizontal accuracy of line files accessed from the Natioanal Centers for Environmental Information are not published with the line files. Most surveys were collected after 2004 used Differential Global Positioning System for navigation. Earlier surveys (B00213, B00214,B00215, B00221, and B00310) were collected using Starfix GPS. Horizontal accuracy for HEN04-1, HEN04-2, HEN04-3, PF0501, PF0502, KNOX17RR, and RB1202 are "Positioning is accurate to better than 5 meters (at 95% confidence)" as stated http://ccom.unh.edu/sites/default/files/metadata/Atlantic_ESRI_DTM_metadata.xml Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: All bathymetric files were collected using Instantaneous Sea Level (except H12490 and H12491) and no additional tidal corrections were applied during import to CARIS HIPS (ver 7.1-9.02). Instantaneous sea level indicates that the data collected were not referenced to a tidal datum, rather that the depths represent a height that is dependent on the local sea level at that location and time. Vertical accuracy for HEN04-1, HEN04-2, HEN04-3, PF0501, PF0502, KNOX17RR, and RB1202 are "Depth errors (at the 95% confidence level) are smaller than 1% of the observed water depth as determined by crosslines" as stated http://ccom.unh.edu/sites/default/files/metadata/Atlantic_ESRI_DTM_metadata.xml Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Step 1. This step is the same for all surveys included in this grid except as noted for RB0904, NF-11-04-NC, MGL1512, NF1208_USGS, H12490, and H12491. Downloaded the raw data files from the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) for each survey listed below. Line files are archived in the geographic coordinate system and loaded into CARIS HIPS (v. 7.1-9.0, Software was updated as new versions were available over the course of this project). All surfaces created in HIPS used a 100 meter grid cell resolution and the Mercator projection with a central longitude of 72.0 degrees West, and a latitude of true scale of 45.0 degrees North that is more suitable for the spatial extent of this project than the geographic coordinate system. >Where: >Survey=Cruise Name >Source=the address of the National Centers for Environmental Information archive location where raw data were downloaded. >Download Date=The calendar date the raw data were downloaded. >Download Format= the version of MB-System format of the data downloaded. >Output Surface= The name of the final CARIS surface (in .csar format) that was used in the combine function. >Surface Creation Date= the calendar date the latest surface was created for input to the combine function. Combine the surveys from Ronald H. Brown, Pathfinder, and Roger Revelle into one surface using the "Start date is least" criteria using CARIS Base Editor (v. 4.1.14).The "Start date is least" criteria puts the surface with the oldest date of data collection on the bottom and newest data on top during the combine function. The combine criteria dictates the cell value that remains when two or more cells from different surfaces overlap.
