Abstract:
Bathymetric terrain models (BTMs) of seafloor morphology are an important component of marine geological investigations. Advances in acquisition and processing technologies of bathymetry data have facilitated the creation of high-resolution bathymetric surfaces that approach the resolution of those available for onshore investigations. These bathymetric terrain models provide a detailed representation of the Earth's subaqueous surface and when combined with other geophysical and geologic datasets, allow for interpretation of modern and ancient geologic processes.     Step 1: Create a new blank feature layer, and transfer the extents of the Contributor Layer produced in the combine process described below. Within CARIS Base Editor (v. 4.0) select the "Create" and "new feature layer" from the main menu and use the spatial extent of the combined surface and name the new feature layer. Input name="Contributor", output name= "VesselName+Cont" (example= RBCont). The extent of the input Contributor layer is produced during the "Combine" operation in Base Editor.     Step 4: Export the feature class from a geodatabase feature class (PRBathSource) to a shapefile (PRBathSource.shp) using the context menu in ArcMap (ver. 9.3.1). During the export operation, the shapefile was projected from UTM Zone 19 (WGS 84) to Geographic (WGS 84) by using the same coordinate system as the data frame in ArcMap (set to Geographic WGS 84). Add two text fields "Source" and "SurveyName" to the shapefile. Populate "Source" field with "INFORM" field then delete "INFORM" field.     Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). The link to the data in the Distribution_Information section had to be fixed. The distribution format name was modified in an attempt to be more consistent with other metadata files of the same data format. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file.     The individual polygons only delineate the extent of bathymetric data used to compile the bathymetric terrain model and may not include all the data collected during the individual survey.

    Polygon boundaries are generated from 150 meter resolution bathymetric surface in CARIS Base Editor (v. 4.0) prior to interpolation to fill small holes in the base surface. Therefore, this shapefile has holes or "no data" values within the boundaries of the shapefile that represent these "no data" values in the base surface that were filled in with interpolation (if required).
