Abstract:
Bathymetric terrain models (BTMs) of seafloor morphology are an important component of marine geological investigations. Advances in technologies of acquiring and processing bathymetric data have facilitated the creation of high-resolution bathymetric surfaces that approach the resolution of those available for onshore investigations. These bathymetric terrain models provide a detailed representation of the Earth's subaqueous surface and when combined with other geophysical and geologic datasets, allow for interpretation of modern and ancient geologic processes. This grid is a compilation of 8 separate surveys conducted between 2002 and 2013. Data were collected using different vessels and sonars, however, the data were processed and editing using the same methods detailed below.

Information about horizontal position accuracy for the four vessels used to collect data in this report vary depending on the vessel owner/operator. Available information is summarized below. NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown: These data were navigated with a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and a P-code receiver. These systems have an estimated horizontal accuracy of +/- 3 meters. NOAA Ship Nancy Foster: Data were navigated using Trimble Zephyr GPS receiver and POS/MV Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS). A Data Acquisition and Processing Report conducted by NOAA Hydrographers in April 2007 shows that these data meet or exceed IHO compliance for IHO order 1. Full report if available at: http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/. R/V Hespérides: No horizontal accuracy information is available. E/V Nautilus: Horizontal position accuracy test were conducted in April 2013.The results from this test show that the EM302 multibeam sonar exceeds the IHO Order 1 standards (2*stdev(depth) or +/-9.4 m) and also exceeds Special Order (< 2 m offset).

All bathymetric files were collected using instantaneous sea level and no additional tidal corrections were applied. Instantaneous sea level indicates that the data were not referenced to a tidal datum, rather the depths represent a height that is dependent on the local sea level at that location and time. Instantaneous Sea Level does not correlate to Mean Sea Level, however for comparison, the total tidal levels (tides, plus no-tidal sea surface heights above the geoid) range between -0.77 meters and 0.81 meters above the geoid for the period 1992-2013 (Egbert and Erofeeva, 2013)

Step 1: Collect data and import multibeam line files into CARIS Hydrographic Information Processing System (HIPS) (versions is year-dependent). Multibeam line files were collected, and processed by onboard USGS personnel during the surveys, except for NF-07-05-CRER and were later archived with NOAA NGDC by NOAA. Basic information about each survey and the surface produces is listed below: Where:
NGDC Cruise Name= The name assigned by NGDC for the survey if they were NOAA-related surveys.
USGS FAN= The USGS Field Activity Number assigned by USGS Woods Hole Science Center for the survey (if USGS personnel were involved)

Step 2: Import multibeam line files into CARIS HIPS for processing: This step is the same for all eight surveys in this grid and summarized below. Produced new CARIS HIPS project (version varies depending on year) for each of the eight surveys and imported the line files by Julian day. Line files were recorded using the geographic coordinate system (WGS 84). During the import process a tide elevation of zero was merged into each line and no further tide corrections were applied. Separate Field Sheets were produced in HIPS using the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Coordinate System, Zone 19 (WGS 84). Depth surfaces were produced (150 m resolution) for each survey using all the lines in the survey in the CARIS Spatial ARchive (csar) format. Processing took place during 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2013.

Step 3: HIPS editing: All line files in each survey were reviewed using the HIPS Swath Editor feature to filter and remove inaccurate soundings. Further editing was completed using the 3-D subset editor. Corrections to the speed of sound were applied using the Refraction Editor if required. Finally, the depth surfaces were rebuilt after all editing was complete and interpolated using a 5x5 matrix size and at least 6 neighboring cells.

Edits to the metadata were made to fix any errors that MP v 2.9.32 flagged. This is necessary to enable the metadata to be successfully harvested for various data catalogs. In some cases, this meant adding text "Information unavailable" or "Information unavailable from original metadata" for those required fields that were left blank. Other minor edits were probably performed (title, publisher, publication place, etc.). A link in the horizontal accuracy report was changed - the link that was there was no longer valid. The depth resolution value of "unknown" was changed to 9999 to meet standard requirements. Minor fixes to the attribute format for some attributes were needed. The metadata date (but not the metadata creator) was edited to reflect the date of these changes. The metadata available from a harvester may supersede metadata bundled within a download file. Compare the metadata dates to determine which metadata file is most recent.

These data are available as an ArcInfo 32-bit floating point binary grid in Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri) format. The grid consists of two folders, one with the "grid name", and one "info" folder. The two folders for each grid are compressed into one file using WinZip (ver. 14.0) software. To utilize these data, the user must have software capable of uncompressing the WinZip file and importing and viewing an Esri ArcRaster grid. The two folders for each grid must be uncompressed to the same folder.
