Known as “CoastCam,” each station collects imagery at fixed intervals and creates derivative products from the imagery. Camera sensors may be visible (RGB) or infrared (IR). The image products include snapshots (“snap”), time-exposure averages (“timex”), pixel intensity standard deviations (“variance”), brightest pixel composites (“bright”), and darkest pixel composites (“dark”). Each camera’s lens distortion characteristics and focal parameters have been measured and are distributed here as intrinsic calibration parameters (“IO” files). Each camera’s extrinsic geometries have been determined using ground control points (GCPs) surveyed in the field of view of each camera (“EO” files). These calibration parameters can be used to georectify images. Each CoastCam station in this data service is organized with a folder for image products (“imagery”) and calibration and geometry data (“calibration”). Images are synced to this data service approximately once daily when stations are operational, and calibration data are added if new surveys are completed. Purpose: These data are provided in an effort to monitor coastal conditions in near real-time and support research by the USGS and its partners into a variety of coastal processes and hazards, including wave runup, water levels, changes in beach topography and nearshore bathymetry, alongshore currents, rip channel formation, and sea ice dynamics. Logical_Consistency_Report: Camera stations generally collect imagery on a daily basis, often only during daylight hours, but stations may temporarily fail to collect imagery due to reasons such as loss of power, equipment malfunction, or system maintenance. Completeness_Report: Data are considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the metadata record carefully for additional details, and to examine EXIF data for individual images if required. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Ground control points for the EO calibration are generally taken with GNSS survey equipment; points typically have a 5 cm or better horizontal accuracy. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Individual cameras for each station undergo calibration to determine intrinsic geometry parameters by collecting images of a black and white checkered board at different distances and positions. See station-specific calibration metadata for dates and additional details. Process_Date: Not complete Source_Produced_Citation_Abbreviation: intrinsic calibration data Process_Step: Process_Description: Cameras are installed at locations (see station specific metadata for details). Initial external calibration testing is performed to determine extrinsic geometry parameters by collecting images from the cameras with ground control point (GCP) targets in their field of views. GCP target locations are surveyed. GCP coordinates and intrinsic calibration data are used to generate extrinsic parameters of the images. See station-specific imagery metadata for dates and additional details. Process_Date: Not complete Source_Produced_Citation_Abbreviation: initial extrinsic calibration data Process_Step: Process_Description: Cameras collect imagery at various intervals (for example, 30 or 60 minutes). At each interval, images are collected at various rates and durations (for example, 10 minutes at 2 Hz or 45 minutes at 1 Hz). This imagery is used to generate snapshots (“snap”), time-exposure averages (“timex”), pixel intensity standard deviations (“variance”), brightest pixel composites (“bright”), and darkest pixel composites (“dark”). Image products are typically synced to a cloud storage bucket daily. Process_Date: Not complete Source_Produced_Citation_Abbreviation: imagery data collection Process_Step: Process_Description: Following imagery data collection, images are synced from the cloud storage bucket to the data service. Once on the data service server, images are renamed to follow the pattern: epochtime.dow.mon.dd_HH_MM_SS.GMT.YYYY.station.c#.type.ext where “epochtime” is the 10-digit epoch timestamp when the image was created, “dow” day of the week, “mon” is month, “dd” is two-digit date, “HH_MM_SS” is two-digit hours, minutes, and seconds, “GMT” is Greenwich Mean Time, “YYYY” is four-digit year, “station” is the name of the CoastCam station, “c#” is the camera number, “type” is image product type, and “ext” is the file extension. Image file header information is added to each file with metadata (see station-specific imagery metadata for details). Image files are then copied to a directory under their CoastCam station, camera number, year, and date code, with date code as doy_Mon.dd, where “doy” is sequential day of the year, “Mon” is 3-character abbreviated month, and “dd” is day of the month. Images are then publicly available through the data service. Process_Date: Not complete Source_Produced_Citation_Abbreviation: imagery publication Process_Step: Process_Description: Additional extrinsic calibration may be performed to account for changes at the station, for example, land subsidence, camera maintenance that results in moving the cameras, or other reasons. See station-specific calibration metadata and data for details and dates of calibrations.
