The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mapped approximately 22 square miles of the Madison Swanson Marine Protected Area (MPA) and Steamboat Lumps MPA, which are located on the Florida shelf edge in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico in 2000 using sidescan sonar and high-resolution chirp seismic-reflection systems. This survey was conducted as part of a larger study of the effectiveness of no-fishing reserves in protecting grouper spawning aggregations. Field activity information for this cruise is available on-line through the U.S. Geological Survey Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System at https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fa=2000-005-FA.
To provide the data acquisition logs in PDF format and Excel spreadsheet logs. These logs can be invaluable in sorting out issues and questions with regards to data collection. The logs contain information about navigation, seismic acquisition, and sidescan sonar acquisition.

These are the logbooks maintained during data acquisition on U.S. Geological Survey cruise 2000-005-FA. The only change to the logs was to the Excel spreadsheet to rename the individual tabs and remove some cartoon pictures that had been inserted into the spreadsheet pages.
These files represent all the acquisition logs maintained on the cruise.
The logbooks were maintained during the survey by the acquisition technical staff. The 2000-005-FA_isi.pdf contains the notes and information pertaining to the ISIS acquisition system, which records the data from the SIS1000 towfish. The SIS1000 system acquires sidescan sonar data and Chirp seismic-reflection data. The 2000-005-FA_nav.pdf contains the notes and information associated with the navigation system. The 2000-005-FA_seis.pdf contains the notes and information associated with the boomer seismic system. This system was only used briefly, and the data were not saved due to the poor quality of the data.

In the Excel spreadsheet, there is a column for System that contains a numeric value. Although the spreadsheet itself does not define the systems those numbers correspond to, the assumption is the relationship is as follows: System 1 = ISIS logging system; System 2 = boomer seismic system; System 3 = navigation logging system; System 4 = gear in the water.
