Accurate data and maps of sea-floor geology are important first steps toward protecting habitat, delineating marine resources, and assessing environmental changes due to natural or human effects. Initiated in 2003, the primary objective of the Geologic Mapping of the Massachusetts Sea Floor program is to develop regional geologic framework information for the management of coastal and marine resources. The project is focused on the inshore waters (5–30 meters deep) of Massachusetts. This dataset is from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) sampling survey 2011-015-FA (September 9–16, 2011) by the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management with partners from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency aboard the ocean survey vessel Bold. During the survey, surficial sediment samples and bottom still and video imagery were collected in Cape Cod Bay, Buzzards Bay, and Vineyard Sound; south of Martha's Vineyard; and south and east of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
This dataset provides the data acquisition log maintained during USGS survey 2011-015-FA. The logbook contains information about navigation and the collection of sediment samples, video, and photographs. It is invaluable in sorting out issues and problems related to data acquisition.
During the survey, bottom still and video imagery was taken at most stations (see shapefiles 2011-015-FA_photos.shp and 2011-015-FA_videos.shp available from the larger work citation; see the Coastal and Marine Geology Program Video and Photograph Portal to view the bottom videos [Golden and others, 2015; link available from the cross-reference citation]). Physical sediment samples were also collected at many stations and analyzed for grain size (see shapefile 2011-015-FA_samples.shp available from the larger work citation) and benthic infauna (see report by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management [2012] available from the cross-reference citation). This logbook contains information and notes kept during the sea floor sampling survey. Corrections were made as they were noticed in the handwritten marked-up version and updated as needed in the cleaned-up version of the logbook. Although some notes and updates were made to the logbook, additional errors in the log-keeping may exist that have not been corrected.
This logbook was maintained during USGS field activity 2011-015-FA conducted offshore of Massachusetts around Cape Cod and the Islands. The original Excel spreadsheet was printed and marked up by hand as the data were processed to document some additional acquisition and processing notes as well as to correct log-keeping errors made in the original log. A cleaned-up version of the original Excel logbook is also provided.
This file represents the official, final acquisition log for USGS field activity 2011-015-FA.
The logbook was maintained by the technical and scientific staff during data acquisition as an Excel spreadsheet. It contains information about navigation systems, sediment sampling, bottom photo and video acquisition, and other miscellaneous notes from the survey. This process step and the subsequent process step were performed by the same person, Seth Ackerman.

The original Excel spreadsheet was printed and marked up by hand as the data were processed to document some additional acquisition and processing notes as well as to correct log-keeping errors made in the original log. The marked-up version was scanned to PDF and is named 2011-015-FA_logbook_scanned.pdf. To make the published logbook more easily readable, a cleaned-up version of the original logbook was made. Handwritten notes on the scanned version were added to the original log. The cleaned-up logbook is provided as a PDF in gray scale without the background cell colors, which may make the scanned version difficult to read, and is called 2011-015-FA_logbook_clean.pdf.

The spreadsheet in the scanned PDF (2011-015-FA_logbook_scanned.pdf) contains the following columns that are relevant to the sampling survey for field activity 2011-015-FA:
JD (Julian day), station number, time in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), depth in feet, DVD time, DVD number, tape number, sample, still number, Hypack file, comment. Within the spreadsheet, the first several rows describe the acquisition equipment.
The definitions of the columns of data are as follows:
JD: Julian day based on UTC time; Julian day is the integer number representing the interval of time in days since January 1 of the year (2011 for these data).
Sta#: sampling site number or name
time_UTC: time in UTC
depth_ft: approximate depth in feet as reported by the ship's crew
DVD time: [THIS FIELD WAS NOT USED]
DVD# and Tape#: These fields indicate when a new DVD or Digital8 (Digital Video - DV) tape was started and the DVD or tape number (sequentially beginning at DVD1/DV-1).
sample: This was marked as y (yes) or n (no) to indicate if a sediment sample collection was successful.
still_no: [THIS FIELD WAS NOT CONSISTENTLY USED] During the first two survey days, this field was used to estimate the number of still photographs taken at each sampling site.
Hypack file: [THIS FIELD WAS NOT USED]
comment: Additional comments about data acquisition for all systems used during USGS field activity 2011-015-FA. This often includes a qualitative visual observation of the sediment that was collected. This observation should not be used; please refer to the sediment sample dataset for laboratory analyses (see shapefile 2011-015-FA_samples.shp available from the larger work citation).
[Unlabeled Column]: An extra column contains some notes typed in the original Excel log, usually pertaining to watch changes and equipment issues. This space has many handwritten notes in the scanned logbook, often related to post-processing that was done to calculate any time offset between the Global Positioning System (GPS) UTC time and the camera time for the photos.
Not all of the fields in the logbook were used. Although some notes and updates were made to the logbook, additional errors in the log-keeping may exist that have not been corrected. The cleaned-up version of the logbook (2011-015-FA_logbook_clean.pdf) has the same column headings as described above for the scanned version except where otherwise noted.
