USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program

Field Activity Details for field activity 07SWL02

Other ID: none

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s):

Affiliate Investigator(s): Robert Morton

Information Specialist(s): Julie Bernier

Data Type(s): Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Biology, Sampling: Geology, Time Series: Mooring (physical oceanography)

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Quantify subsidence and erosion in areas of historical wetland loss

Start Port/Location: Leeville/Port Fourchon, LA

End Port/Location: Leeville/Port Fourchon, LA

Start Date: 2007-10-07

End Date: 2007-10-11

Equipment Used: Vibracorer, Peat Corer, Tripods, GPS

Information to be Derived: Sediment-surface elevations and stratigraphic analysis (especially, peat thickness and depth to the organic-clastic contact) will be used to estimate the magnitude and rate of subsidence and erosion between marsh and open-water core sites.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Collected 25 vibracores and 10 push cores from 3 study areas between Leeville and Port Fourchon. Recorded water depths at each core site and along transects between core sites.
