USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program

Field Activity Details for field activity 1976-015-FA

Other ID: FAY 015

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Ronald J. Miller, Kenneth E. Parolski

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Environmental Data: Temperature, Environmental Data: Turbidity, Imagery: Photo, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: General objectives were to obtain quasi-synoptic information on suspended-sediment transport within the South Texas OCS. Specific objectives: 1. obtain water column samples for textural analysis and water chemistry to establish seasonal textural patterns; 2. obtain vertical transmittance-temperature profiles to establish seasonal turbidity patterns; 3. drift bottle casts to measure surface currents during the cruise period; 4. Phleger cores for clay analysis; and 5. hydrocarbon cores.

Start Port/Location: Corpus Christi, TX

Start Date: 1976-05-21

End Date: 1976-05-25

Equipment Used: Camera- deep sea, Magnavox satellite positioning system, Martek Transmissometer

Information to be Derived: Time series data; Samples and chemical analysis; Grain size analysis; Suspended sediment concentrations;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Stations: 26; Water samples: 78 (3 per station - surface, mid-depth, bottom); Vertical transmittance-temperature profiles: 26; Phleger cores: 26; Hydrocarbon cores: 2; Drift bottle casts: 190; Minisparker profiles: 90 km.
