USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program

Field Activity Details for field activity 1978-008-FA

Other ID: E-2E-78

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Mark Ayers

Affiliate Investigator(s): Fred Keer - USGS

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Biology, Sampling: Geology, Biological Field Study: Experiments, Seismics: Air Gun / Water Gun, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Obtain at least 30 piston cores from 21 pre-selected target areas and determine character of bottom sediment in the study area. Subsamples were collected for hydrocarbon content, bacteria taxonomy, geotechnical properties, pore water geochemistry, and age determination.

Start Port/Location: Brunswick, GA

End Port/Location: Beaufort, NC

Start Date: 1978-04-02

End Date: 1978-04-13

Equipment Used: Corer - slow, Air gun, Corer - gravity, Dredge, Magnavox satellite positioning system, Loran-C

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis; Grain size analysis; Morphology;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Piston cores: 51, archived at Duke; Box dredges: 26; Rock dredges: 12; Airgun.
