USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program

Field Activity Details for field activity 2010-003-FA

Other ID: none

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): David Twichell

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Elizabeth Pendleton

Data Type(s): Location-Elevation: Navigation, Seismics: Sub Bottom Profiler, Sonar: Multibeam, Sonar: Sidescan

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Sea floor mapping of coastal areas along the Elizabeth Islands.

Start Port/Location: Cuttyhunk, MA

End Port/Location: Cuttyhunk, MA

Start Date: 2010-09-09

End Date: 2010-09-17

Equipment Used: Klein 531 sidescan, Real Time Kinematic GPS, EdgeTech 424 chirp sub-bottom profiler, Multibeam swath bathymetry

Information to be Derived:

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: The nearshore areas along both the Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay sides of the Elizabeth Islands extending from Quicks Hole to the western end of Sow and Pigs Reef were surveyed using swath bathymetric, sidescan sonar, and seismic reflection techniques. Equipment problems and weather limited the survey to six days. The data were all of high quality, although sub-bottom penetration on the seismic data was limited for much of the area because of extensive fields of boulders.

Data Acquired

Survey EquipmentSurvey InfoData Type(s)Data Collected
Real Time Kinematic GPS --- Navigation
EdgeTech 424 chirp sub-bottom profiler --- Sub Bottom Profiler
2010-003-FA-SE-001 ( Raw chirp 424 segy data from Cuttyhunk CZM survey)
2010-003-FA-SE-001-01 ( PNG images of each seismic profile were generated in order to incorporate images of the seismic data into Geographic Information System (GIS) projects and data archives utilizing HTML. These PNG images represent approximately 253 km of chirp seismic data collected with the EdgeTech 424 in Sept. 2010. This format is universal and yields an easily browseable pictorial view of the seismic profiles. Each profile image is hotlinked to its corresponding trackline navigation contained within a polyline shapefile ('2010-003-FA_Chirp424_tracklines.shp'), and even 500 shot-point locations are available in a point shapefile ('2010-003-FA_Chirp424_500sht.shp). All of these data are available in an ESRI ArcMap project, as well as separate .zip archives on this digital data DVD archive ().)
Multibeam swath bathymetry --- Multibeam
2010-003-FA-BA-001-01 ( This grid represents approximately 24.5 square km of bathymetric data that were collected in 2010. These data are used to define the sea-floor morphology surrounding the nearshore of the western Elizabeth Islands, Massachusetts. This interpolated grid provides a complete seafloor surface for data visualization and presentation. )
Klein 531 sidescan --- Sidescan
2010-003-FA-SO-001-01 ( his GeoTIFF (Tagged Image File Format) image contains sidescan sonar data that were collected in Sept. 2010. These data are used to define the seafloor geology surrounding the western Elizabeth Islands, Massachusetts )
2010-003-FA-SO-001 ( Raw Sidescan xtf files from Cuttyhunk CZM survey on (4) BD-R disc's.)
