Other ID: none

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Richard Poore

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): T Hickey, Christopher Reich

Data Type(s): Imagery: Photo, Location-Elevation: Navigation, Sampling: Geology, Time Series: Mooring (physical oceanography)

Scientific Purpose/Goals: Coral cores are collected from live coral heads to be used in retrospective sea surface temperature and paleoenvironmental studies. Holocene cores are collected to provide geologic history of the reef tract and used as proxies for sea level fluctuations during past 10,000 years.

Vehicle(s): Suburban - White 6, Ford F-350 Dually White (GSA)

Start Port/Location: Convoy Point, Homestead, FL

End Port/Location: Convoy Point, Homestead, FL

Start Date: 2008-05-01

End Date: 2008-05-01

Equipment Used: Choke Ring Antenna, Ashtech Z-Xtreme DGPS, Camera, Digital, Hand Held, Core Barrels, Tripods

Information to be Derived: lithologic description, strontium-to-calcium ratios, water depth, sea surface temperature, sea level position, elevation to top of holocene core locations.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Collected cores from 5 coral heads (Siderastrea siderea, Montastraea faveolata, and Diploria strigosa). Collected Holocene cores from 4 locations with depths ranging from 0 to 30 ft below sea floor. GPS position and elevations were collected at each of the Holocene coring sites using dual-frequency GPS receivers and Thales choke-rings and corrected by using a basestation located on Elliott Key positioned at a known benchmark.
