Other ID: none

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): James Flocks

Affiliate Investigator(s):

Information Specialist(s): Julie Bernier, Kyle Kelso

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology

Scientific Purpose/Goals: The purpose of this fieldwork is to ground truth geophysical data collected during previous research cruises.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Point Cadet, MS

End Port/Location: Point Cadet, MS

Start Date: 2010-08-09

End Date: 2010-10-05

Equipment Used: Vibracorer

Information to be Derived: Ground truthing of geophysical data will include the investigation subsurface sedimentological properties using: lithostratigraphic interpretation, age dating, photographic documentation, and grain size analysis.

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Approximately 60-70 sediment cores will be obtained at various locations around the Mississippi barrier Island complex. These sedimentological data will help to understand the integral geomorphological properties of barrier island sustainability and natural migration.

Notes: This cruise was originally scheduled from 08/09/2010 to 08/26/2010 but due to bad weather conditions had to be re-visited from 09/27/2010 to 10/05/2010.
