View new CMGDS report form

Other ID: ANN-8-76

Status: Completed

Organization(s): USGS, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center

Funding Program(s):

Principal Investigator(s): Charles J. O'Hara

Affiliate Investigator(s): Albert Stockel, Woodward-Clyde Consultants

Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Geology, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: The vibracore sampling program is intended to determine the nature of the bottom sediments and shallow substrate of the inner shelf. The core data will be correlated with sub-bottom seismic profiling data to determine the distribution, lithology and economic importance of offshore geologic features and mineral resources. In addition, these studies will document important landmark data, help to evaluate the feasibility and environmental conditions of offshore mining of mineral deposits and offshore disposal of solid waste material, and provide information on the geology and geologic history of the region.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

End Port/Location: Woods Hole, MA

Start Date: 1976-08-24

End Date: 1976-09-06

Equipment Used: Alpine Vibracorer, Epsco LORAN-C

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis; Grain size analysis; Morphology;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: Cores: 16; Total core feet: 294 ft (90 m).

Staff: Charles J. O'Hara, Robert N. Oldale, Ralph Lewis, Wayne Ferrebee

Affiliate Staff:
Jack McLane - geologist; Woodward-Clyde Consultant: Albert Stockel - field supervisor; WHOI/MIT Joint Program Students: James Austin
Scott Briggs

Notes: Core rig specifications -- Penetration capability: 12 m (40 ft.); Diameter of core: 9 cm (3.5 in.); Minimum water depth for operation: 11 m (35 ft.); Maximum water depth for operation: 67 m (225 ft.). Original Center People field contained: Chuck O'Hara - Ch. Sci., Wayne Mac Ferrebee - geologist, Ralph Lewis - geologist, Jack McLane - geologist, Bob Oldale - geologist.
