Information Specialist(s):

Data Type(s): Sampling: Biology, Sampling: Geology, Environmental Data: CTD, Environmental Data: Temperature, Sonar: Single Beam, Location-Elevation: Navigation

Scientific Purpose/Goals: The major objective of this cruise was to collect approximately 10 to 20 diver cores to be analyzed for stratigraphic distributions of Pb-210 and selected trace metals.

Vehicle(s):

Start Port/Location:

End Port/Location: Alexandria, VA

Start Date: 1978-10-17

End Date: 1978-10-20

Equipment Used: Push corer (wh), Temperature and salinity, Echosounder, Raytheon radar

Information to be Derived: Samples and chemical analysis;

Summary of Activity and Data Gathered: The diver corer with a split core barrel worked extremely well and the cores obtained showed only minimal disturbance. The cruise was very successful, and the divers did an excellent job in all respects. 17 sites were occupied and the following were obtained at each site: 1. A cross section depth profile was run; 2. A diver core (1 m x 12 cm diameter) was taken, split, subsampled and archive half placed in D-tube for transport to Corpus for X-radiography; 3. A Benthos gravity core was taken, extruded, described and sampled on deck; 4. Salinity, conductivity and temperature measurements were made in lower portions of the river. S/C/T: 34; Daily log #67.
